Liberated - an exhibition by Desrie Thomson-George

The Fine Artist is showing sculptures and installations driven by political, social and cultural issues of being a Black woman in the West.

Storytelling in the tradition of West African ‘Griots’ who pass on their society's history through stories, poems, and music, is at the heart of Desrie Thomson-George's work. Stories, usually with a moral message, have been recounted around her for as long as she can remember and they continue to play a significant role in her life.

When Thomson-George came to the UK as a child from South America, the environment towards Black people and anyone different was one of extreme hostility. Telling stories was a means to endure the impact of her new life. Her work is consequently driven by political, social and cultural issues of being a Black woman living in the West, using art as empowering change through narration and dialogue.

Through the creation of figurative sculptures and installations this exhibition tells the story of Jilo, a Black woman, her struggles and her journey. Her invisibility while being visible, and the irony of this. The artist experiments with recycled metal, glass, paper and textiles, sometimes pressed into jesmonite and plaster moulds, to reflect the complexities of her experience and who she is. The materials are selected deliberately to symbolise different states of being. For example: metal for strength, latex - invisibility and vulnerability, glass - fragility and paper - media or propaganda.

Liberated by Desrie Thomson-George will be at The Art Academy, 155 Walworth Road, SE17 1RS 6 - 8 July 12 - 4 pm.
