Explore Mayfair's history for Museums at Night

18 May 2018 | Visit website

Twice a year, Museums at Night invites all UK museums, galleries and heritage sites to throw open their doors after hours to showcase their treasures in unexpected ways.

Handel & Hendrix in London marks the homes, separated by a wall, that belonged to George Frideric Handel, composer of some of the world’s most enduring baroque music, and the flat where two centuries later Jimi Hendrix lived with his girlfriend, record player and guitar. This May, an evening of live music, performances and interactive activities celebrates the annual festivities that took place near Brook Street during the 18th century and gave Mayfair its name.

On the first floor, in Handel’s Music Room, Baroque musicians Charles MacDougall (tenor) and Katarzyna Kowalik (harpsichord) will reveal a narrative celebrating the coming of Spring using some of Handel’s greatest operatic pieces. On the second floor, Handel’s bedroom – the room where the great composer died in 1759 – will be taken over by Art Macabre where you can try your hand at life drawing inspired by accounts of the May Fayre’s ‘beheading of puppets’, sketch curious characters and macabre marionettes to be found at the fair. Up on the third floor, where Hendrix lived in 1969, English songstress Olivia Chaney will perform a very special acoustic set in Jimi’s bedroom.

Join Handel & Hendrix for a night of festivities on 18 May from 7-10 pm. Tickets are £20.
