This weekend, the National Maritime Museum will once more host a series of free events to commemorate International Slavery Remembrance Day.

This year’s event focuses on the ties between the transatlantic slave trade and the history of Greenwich, an area frequently celebrated for its beauty and maritime connections, but rarely connected to the trade in enslaved peoples, an aspect of its history that is overlooked.

Events include:
• An introductory lecture with historian and author S. I. Martin
• A walking tour uncovering the hidden stories of slave owners in the Greenwich area
• An Ink Story Workshop with Sophie Herxheimer, a self-professed collector of stories who will be creating bespoke artworks inspired by identity, home, migration and loss
• Songs of Freedom workshop with Ethnovox, exploring songs as a medium of resistance
• A performance exploring the life of John Simmonds, son of a freed slave, who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar
• A Closing Ceremony in which rose petals are scattered in the Thames as an act of silent commemoration.
