Joseph Beuys Exhibition at Waddington Custot

This new exhibition revisits the German artist's famous boxing-match-as-artwork staged by Beuys in 1972.

7 July 2017 – 11 August 2017 | Visit website

The Waddington Custot gallery presents an exhibition that puts in context German artist Joseph Beuys’ 1972 sculpture Boxkampf für die direkte Demokratie (Boxing Match for Direct Democracy).

The sculpture features a large, horizontal vitrine that houses the two original pairs of boxing gloves, protective helmet and the boxing ring ropes from Beuys’ conceptual ‘farewell action’ at documenta V, a boxing match, between Joseph Beuys and Abraham David Christian.

This work will be exhibited in conjunction with the debut UK presentation of the re-mastered archive footage of the boxing match.

Joseph Beuys: Boxkampf für die direkte Demokratie will be on display at Waddington Custot from 7 July – 11 August 2017.
