Lock Her Up at Tate Modern

Marking the centenary of women’s suffrage three unique sounds installations explore women’s experiences of imprisonment.

12 June 2018 – 17 June 2018 | Visit website

As the UK marks the centenary of women’s victory in the fight for suffrage, for which hundreds of women were imprisoned, live, digital and crossover arts company Fuel presents three specially commissioned sound installations exploring different aspects of female incarceration. Working with leading academics on the history of women’s imprisonment at the University of Warwick, Olivier award-winning sound designer Gareth Fry and and 3 female performance makers, Fuel will present the installations at a week-long exhibition at Tate Modern before touring the UK (dates tbc) and being made available online as a podcast series.

Rachel Mars explores women’s experience of solitary confinement and mental health, Paula Varjack responds to the history of women’s resistance against institutional control from the Suffragettes to the modern day and Sabrina Mahfouz addresses the pressing subject of maternity and motherhood in prison. The sound installations will be on display as part of the Warwick University Tate Exchange Exhibition, themed around The Production of Truth, Justice and History

Lock Her Up will be at Tate Modern from 12 – 17 June with a panel discussion on Friday 15 June 12.15-1pm. Further touring/download plans to be announced.
