A guide to Christmas markets

13 December 2017 Katie Da Cunha Lewin

‘Last Christmas’ is on repeat in the office, and there’s been a bit of snow: the Christmas season is in full swing! We’ve had a look through the markets across London to find the best winter festivals, markets and events.

Southbank Centre Winter Market

Every year, the Southbank host their annual Southbank Centre Winter Market. Selling a mixture of gifts, booze and delicious food, this is a great opportunity for a nice wander next to the river whilst you do a bit of Christmas shopping. This year, they even have a Finnish Rooftop Sauna so you can heat up in the traditional Finnish way with an exclusive view over the Thames.

Lee Valley

Lee Valley, famous for its ice skating rink, hosts the Lee Valley Christmas Market and Grotto. Once you’ve exhausted yourself by falling over whilst practicing your skating skills, you can have a break at their Christmas market looking for presents, or head over to the funfair to try your luck at some games. They also have a Santa’s Grotto where little ones can meet Father Christmas and get a gift!

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

In the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, there are tonnes of wintery things to do: from Ice Skating to watching Cirque Berserk show off their amazing skills, or see everyone’s favourite bear, Sooty, in a special Sooty Christmas Show. They also host a German Christmas market. With over 200 cute stalls selling jewellery, food and more, you can browse and cosy up.

Christmas by the River

Christmas by the River at London Bridge is something slightly different this year; as well as hosting lots of stalls selling artisanal gifts and places to eat and drink, there are a range of workshops on offer. ‘Ring in The New Year’ helps anyone planning on popping the question who might be feeling a bit nervous! Marriage proposal expert Daisy Amodio helps you plan and prepare how best to ask that special someone the big question. Or how about finding out how to make a Christmas jumper? Brixton boutique Make Do and Mend host a special making afternoon, Jumper for Joy’ where you can adorn and embroider any jumper you have that might need a bit of festive cheer.

The Greenwich Wintertime Festival

The Greenwich Wintertime Festival is a new contemporary winter market situated next to some of London’s most interesting and unusual history, such as the Old Royal Naval College and the Cutty Sark.  The organisers try a different format, where visitors can book 3 hour slots to avoid overcrowding, allowing for more of a relaxing afternoon or evening out.

Crystal Palace Winterfest

The beautiful Crystal Palace park hosts Crystal Palace Winterfest, a mixture of stalls, rides, dodgems and even a carousel.  From a lovely Noel Market to lots of treats like doughnuts and waffles, there is plenty on offer to keep you full and happy!
