Best Music of the Week: 18-24 January

18 January 2019 Billie Manning

Show of the week: Verdi: La traviata
Following a one-off concert performance in the autumn at the Royal Festival Hall as Anna in Le Willis, Ermonela Jaho returns to Covent Garden in the New Year to sing the role that at the age of 14 made her fall in love with opera - Violetta in Verdi's evergreen La traviata. A seasoned interpreter of Puccini heroines including Mimi, Magda, Manon and others whose names do not begin with M, Jaho is justifiably famous for her Puccini interpretations and superb vocalism. Violetta in particular is one of her signature roles and the role that first brought her to Covent Garden in 2008. She has since portrayed Violetta in more than 15 opera houses around the world, from Vienna to New York, via Paris and Madrid. Of her recent performances in Sydney which marked her Opera Australia debut, Jaho was described in the press as “an unstoppable phenomenon” and “a Violetta to die for.” Verdi’s only love story out of his 27 operas, La traviata is the most-performed opera in the world and with Jaho in the principal role, this is sure to be a stunning rendition.
