London’s Most Extra Desserts to Treat Yo’self With

13 October 2018 Billie Manning

Not only is it World Dessert Day this weekend, it’s also treat yo’self day, which means it’s only right for you to get out there and find one of these extraordinarily extravagant and exceedingly enticing desserts. All of the desserts listed are next-level extra as well as tasty enough even to tempt you out-of-borough, so for goodness cakes, make like a banana and split before everyone else gets there first!

Cronuts at Dum Dum Donutterie
Have you ever stood in a bakery, croissants on your left, doughnuts on your right, your head whipping between the two as you weep: croissant… or doughnut… croissant… or doughnut? Well fear not, because humans have done what they do best and innovated and invented in order to solve their most pressing problems, which has led us to the cronut. Called a Dum Dum at the Dum Dum Donutterie, presumably because everyone who ever chose between a croissant or a doughnut previous to its invention is in fact a dumdum, these yummy Frankensteins come in crème brûlée flavour for francophiles (or pyromaniacs) among many drool-worthy others.

Chin Chin ice cream
Chin Chin have been serving the residents of both north and south London their scientific concoctions for a few years now, and their spectacular ice cream is proving as popular as ever. Walk into what Chin Chin calls their ice cream ‘lab’ and you’ll get to see your order frozen right before your eyes, using big puffy clouds of liquid nitrogen. Stay out of truffle and don’t freeze your fingers off trying to poke the liquid nitrogen and you’ll be happy as Larry. These tasty treats do come with another warning, though: you won’t want to share.

Bob Bob Ricard's chocolate glory
You probably already know all about Bob Bob Ricard’s famous champagne button and its luxurious decor, or maybe word of its baked oysters has reached your ears. But dessert at the British-Russian restaurant isn’t anything to be sniffed at, either. There are several sweet options to be had, but the king of the dessert menu has to be their appropriately-named Chocolate Glory. What can only be described as a chocolate bomb is actually a case of milk chocolate around a scoop of mousse, citrus jelly and brownie pieces. This one is certainly a big treat, being as it is at one of London’s premier fine dining spots, but by golly, you won’t regret it.

Candyfloss ice creams at Milk Train Cafe
Their motto is ‘ice-cream makes you happy’. First of all, they’re right, and second of all, they’re so right. If you want to walk around with a cloud of rainbow deliciousness in your hands (and who wouldn’t), then Milk Train Café is for you. The café’s soft serve ice cream comes in a variety of unsual flavours, from black sesame to custard tart, with a raft of colourful toppings and sauces – pick from strawberry chips, popcorn and more. But best of all, the chilly confections are each served ensconced in their very own cloud of candyfloss. At least you’ll be smiling before your teeth all rot away.

Freakshakes at Maxwell's
This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the most influential Americana import since the return of populism: freakshakes. And nowhere are the freakshakes freakier or shakier than Maxwell’s. You can try the OTT creations in the flavours of your favourite chocolate bars, such as Mars, or go for one of their nerdier creations. They currently have Pokémon themed shakes, so choose your starter and get going – will it be Squirtle or Bulbasaur?
