Five Fangtastic Halloween Film Screenings

16 October 2018 Kate Plummer

Whether you're a hardcore horror mega-fan or a self-confessed Hallowimp, there's a Halloween movie event somewhere in London to en-witch your spooky celebrations.

1. HorrOctober at The Prince Charles Cinema

“A month of screams, chills, blood and guts!” is what’s being promised (or is that threatened?) at one of our favourite London cinemas. Their HorrOctober programming provides something for hardcore horror fans and self confessed Hallowimps alike, with comedy and family classics like Death Becomes Her, What We Do In The Shadows and The Addams Family for the latter, and spine-tingling selections such as The Evil Dead, Psycho and Halloween for the former. As well as their one-off trick or treat screenings, there are also some of the PCC’s excellent All-Nighter Movie Marathons with themes such as classic horror (think Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist) modern horror (including Get Out and The Babadook) as well as Teen Horror and nights celebrating the work of Dario Argento and John Carpenter. We’ve seen enough scary movies to know that whatever you do… don’t fall asleep!

The Prince Charles Cinema is located at 7 Leicester Pl, London WC2H 7BY. See the website for further details of HorrOctober screenings.

2. Film and Fizz: The Shining at One Aldwych

As was once famously said, “No beer and no TV make Homer…something something.” The Simpsons' rendition is just one of many many pop culture nods to cult film The Shining, and we reckon they're on to something. This Halloween, how about you ditch the work for all the play and upgrade the no beer and no TV to a glass of Lallier Champagne and a viewing of Stanley Kubrick’s classic in One Aldwych Hotel’s private screening room? Unlike the Overlook Hotel, there’ll be no blood-filled lifts or creepy twins, just contemporary luxury surroundings as you watch Jack Nicholson’s sanity unravel to the peril of his family. After the film and fizz you’ll also be treated to an indulgent three-course meal at the hotel’s Indigo restaurant. Forget the tricks, this Halloween event is all about the treats.

Film and Fizz: The Shining takes place on 31 October at One Aldwych, London WC2B 4BZ

3. Themed Film Nights at The Clapham Grand

The Clapham Grand has been around for over a century and has prided itself on being a “palace of varieties” throughout its long history, which makes it the perfect place for a whole host of weird and wonderful Halloween celebrations. Part of the festivities are screenings of some of your cinematic favourites, including Ghostbusters, Hocus Pocus, Phantom of the Opera, The Corpse Bride and, of course, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not known for a shy and retiring atmosphere, The Grand encourages its audiences to cheer and boo for their favourite characters, join in the dancing and don your best themed costume to truly get into the spirit. With a photobooth to showcase your costumes and awards for the best dressed, as well as interval games and devilishly good themed cocktails, this is cinema - but not as you know it.

4. Brunch Spooktacular at Exhibit B

Brunch and Halloween probably aren’t two words you’d naturally put together. What could be scary about breakfast food? Maybe a bacon sandwitch? A full English with baked zombeans? Or bad puns aside, maybe they’ve, brace yourself…run out of smashed avocado!? Luckily for you, we’re not in charge of this mash-up; we’ve left that to the wonderful Exhibit B on spooky Streatham Hill. More Bloody Mary than bloody scary, choose between screenings of Hocus Pocus or Practical Magic, which you’ll settle down to watch after a delicious brunch and the option of bottomless bubbles. Will you opt for the sassy Sanderson sisters terrifying the children of Salem, or the Owens sisters dealing with a very bad case of the undead ex? In short, which witch wins it for you?

5. Movie Nights Halloween Special at the Natural History Museum

Surely it’s a common nightmare to find yourself somewhere dark surrounded by skeletons, right? Okay, okay, so the skeletons in question may be less Army of the Dead and more Hope the Blue Whale and pals, but the stunning Hintze Hall is undoubtedly an epic setting for a movie night that certainly leaves Netflix on the sofa in the shade. With showings of cult chillers The Shining and The Blair Witch Project, as well as 80s favourite Ghostbusters for a more comedic Halloween affair, as well as granting you entry to the museum’s Life in The Dark exhibition, you won’t want to crunch your complimentary popcorn too loud, as after all, you never know who… or what… may hear you…

Movie Nights Halloween Special will take place 28 - 29 October at the Natural History Museum, Cromwell Rd, London SW7 5BD
