Girlfriends Season at the BFI

20 March 2018 Kate Plummer

Back in February we included the BFI Girlfriends Season Galentines Day Special as one of our favourite events to celebrate the platonic loves in our lives. When it came to the representation of the complex love that makes up female friendships, as well as immersing itself in showcasing talented women both in front of and behind the camera, it was the season that kept on giving.

Last week we teamed up with the BFI and invited some talented women to each bring a member of their girl gang and enjoy a screening of the incredibly influential but often overlooked 1978 film, Girlfriends.  Following New York friends Anne and Susan, the film was ahead of its time in its portrayal of two young women carving out their own different paths, whether it be marriage and children, or a career as a photographer, and the refreshingly honest and realistic handling of how the power of female friendship comes with both its challenges and rewards.

They say the trick to maintaining and appreciating all relationships in your life is to put a little more friendship in your romances and a little more romance in your friendships. That’s why the screening was followed up with a mate date dinner to remember courtesy of Benugo’s BFI Bar and Kitchen. Perfectly situated to encapsulate the vibrant buzz of the BFI, there was feasting on everything from a game-changing ham hock terrine, chicken supreme on a bed of cumin-spiced puy lentils, celeriac purée and thyme jus. In fact the only moment where female friendship didn’t reign supreme was the potential food envy from any guest who didn’t choose the salivation-inducing salted caramel drizzled sticky toffee pudding.
