May Bank Holiday in London

28 April 2018 Sian Brett

It might be hard to find a maypole to dance round in London this May Day bank holiday, but worry not! We’ve rounded up the best ways to spend that glorious long weekend, so that when you do eventually head back to work you can regale the office with tales of your wining, dining, and cultural excursions. Get you.

Arcadia

Usually the centrepiece of Glastonbury, Arcadia is a 50 tonne fire breathing metal spider. We know, mental. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Arcadia at Glastonbury, there will be a two-day stand-alone festival at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 5 and 6 May. Alongside music from Rudimental and Groove Armada there will be the Metamorphosis show, an immersive theatre-circus combo that promises to have you staring at the mechanical giants above you in wonder.

Arcadia Festival takes place 5-6 May in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, E20 2ST.

Annual Canal Festival at Little Venice

A slightly more traditional way to spend May Day is this canal festival in Little Venice. Featuring children’s activities, music, street food and boat parades, it’s a family fun day out accompanied by some of the oldest canal boats in the country. This year sees even more music being programmed, from jazz and blues in the ale tent to local bands in the amphitheatre. To top it all off you can vote for your favourite decorated boat in the procession. Let the battle of the boats commence!

Underbelly

Since you’ve got all this spare time over bank holiday weekend why not book those Underbelly shows you’ve been meaning to catch? We’re really excited about smash hit and Edinburgh sell-out show Notflix, where the cast improvise songs about Netflix shows live on stage. If music is your thing then you’re definitely going to want to check out Massaoke Club La La too, a half gig and half club night karaoke extravaganza. For those of you on babysitting duty, check out Screaming with Laughter, the daytime comedy club designed for those with babes in arms.

Underbelly Festival takes place on the Southbank, 30 Queens Walk, Lambeth, SE1 8XX

Skylight London

Opening on 3 May, just in time for the bank holiday weekend, Skylight rooftop bar at Tobacco Dock hosts 3 floors of bars, street food, games, DJ’s, and most importantly croquet. The guys behind Skylight hosted a rooftop ice rink over the winter, and this summer fixture of theirs looks set to rule the skyline in much the same way. Throughout the summer there will be one off events and parties, but this bank holiday weekend is enough to celebrate with a pint for us.

Skylight London is located at Tobacco Dock, Pennington Street Entrance, Wapping, E14 2SF

Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley

2018 marks the first year that the women’s FA Cup semi-finals are being shown live on the BBC, as well as the final – but the true way to mark such a momentous sporting event is to be there in the crowd at Wembley, cheering them on. Arsenal Women play Chelsea Ladies in what looks set to be a nail biter of a match.

You can buy tickets for the Women’s FA Cup Final here.
