South London’s Best Romantic Restaurants

30 January 2019 Livvi Alderson-Tuck

It’s that time of year again where cheesy cards are flying of the shelves and nationwide perfume sales rocket; Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and if you want to make sure that your date is one to remember, take a look at the best romantic restaurants South London has to offer.

Minnow - Clapham Common
You won’t find a more romantic setting in South London than Minnow; looking out over Clapham Common, this local fine dining restaurant is adorned with twinkling fairy lights and beautiful floral arrangements. The kitchen at Minnow focuses on local produce and creates seasonal, delicious dishes, such as seared tuna with a black olive, red pepper and orange dressing. And if that isn’t enough to tempt any lovebirds out here, Minnow will be serving a special three-course Valentine’s Dinner for £55. Opt in for the oysters to kick start your romantic meal with an aphrodisiac hit and choose the melting chocolate fondant for the perfect end to your evening.

Heidi’s - Balham
If you’re taking the plunge and going on a first date, you may need a little Dutch courage to calm those nerves. Cue Heidi’s, a cosy, softly-lit spot which is just as charming as it is boozy. Heidi’s bar is lined with help-yourself wine fridges activated by swiping a topped up Heidi’s card; break the ice by sampling an array of wines from around the globe, including a mix of both Old and New World Wines. And if you sample a glass too many, Heidi’s offers a range delicious nibbles to soak it all up - we like the sound of the tempura pork belly bites and the smoky padron peppers with almonds.

Sticks ‘n’ Sushi - Wimbledon
If you want a place with a great atmosphere and great food for your date night, head to Sticks ‘n’ Sushi in Wimbledon. This branch of the Scandi-Japanese fusion restaurant group is housed in an old carriage manufacturers; the twisted lamps, wheeled tables and dark leather seats which make up the decor give the impression you are on a horse drawn carriage ride- if that isn’t romantic, we don’t know what is! The range of small plates which make up the menu mean you and your date will have to get stuck in and share; we recommend the fresh scallop sashimi with miso aioli, the duck heart stick with teryaki and the wagu beef yaki for serious indulgence.

Naughty Piglets - Brixton
Naughty Piglets is the perfect example of a power couple in action. Naughty Piglets is a chilled bar and eatery which showcases the best wines from small producers who really express the terrain of their vineyards through their wine, set up by husband and wife team Joe and Margaux Sharratt. Food-wise, highlights include grilled pear with Jerusalem artichoke, hazelnuts and blue cheese, gnocchi with lobster cream and a smooth creme caramel (the best way to end a romantic date night). Due to its small size, Naughty Piglets is great for an intimate date night, but make sure you book in advance as this is a South London favourite.

Hood - Streatham Hill
If you want to visit a restaurant which is all about love, Hood is the place for you, and we don’t mean red ribbons and roses. Hood’s love for its community has become its best feature and shines through in the stunning menu and friendly service. Focusing on local producers and suppliers, head chef Mike Brown creates amazing dishes like torched salmon with Dorset yoghurt, keta caviar, pickled cucumber and chive oil and Streatham fig panna cotta with pistachio, almond and honey biscotti. Serving gins, beers and soft drinks created in London, this neighbourhood spot is great for a special occasion date night or even a solo Sunday brunch for some self loving.
