The Best Food in London this December

6 December 2017 Livvi Alderson-Tuck

In the style of Slade, IT’S CHRIIIISTMAS, so get loosening your purse strings and your waist belt, as there is no better way to celebrate the festivities than eating and drinking your way through December. Here at London Calling, we have been checking out the new openings and pop ups in the capital this month to inspire you for your festive parties and gatherings, all which offer far more than just turkey and Christmas pudding.

One of the summer’s hottest spots, Pergola on the Roof, was packed last season with people soaking up the sun with a refreshing tipple. Swap that sunshine for snuggly blankets and patios heaters and that Aeperol Spritz for comforting mulled wine, and you get an idea of what Pergola is offering up this winter. The rooftop, which boasts stunning views over the cityscape, will be enclosed this season so you won’t freeze, yet the glass ceiling will allow you to take in the starry wintry sky. Hot cocktails will be on offer to warm your bones and Patty & Bun, Tonkostu and Made of Dough will on be on site to serve juicy burgers, steaming plates of noodles and delicious, floury pizzas. If you want to take London in, in all its Yuletide glory, we reckon this bar will be the perfect location to see the city’s sparkling Christmas lights.

If drinks with a view is your kind of party, then you must check out the Peckham Rye car park’s latest development this December. People have been flocking to this car park for years to get a drink at the iconic Frank’s bar with its serious Insta-worthy vista. However, now there is even more fun to be had as the car park is being transformed into a new street food hub; Peckham Levels. This cool, community led, arty space will be the new home to a range of eateries such as Drum & Flats, serving up lip-smackingly good fried chicken with a secret homemade sauce and Canard, whose decadent duck confit burgers are sumptuous gifts from heaven. There will also be a craft beer bar to quench your thirst, and WEST, a Californian inspired café offering natural wines and breakfast. With so much food to taste, you could stay here from Christmas Day to New Year and never go hungry.

If you can’t quite find time to jet away to the slopes this December, never fear, as Le Rac Shack is bringing Alpine cuisine to Clapham once more this Christmas, with their pop up restaurant, The Raclette Bar. Every year, a space above The Clapham North Pub, called The Treehouse, is transformed into a cosy chalet, serving up incredible raclette. This year, their festive menu offers delicious bites to start, such as deep-fried camembert and chicory with a blue cheese mousse and bacon, before moving on to the main event. With your very own raclette burner, you can melt your selection of cheeses to your preferred bubbling level, and then pour it over salty cured meats, or some of the unlimited rosemary potatoes, chips, salads and pickles. However, it’s not a true Christmas dinner without turkey, so you will also be treated to succulent turkey with crispy stuffing balls and rich gravy to throw into the mix. And if you miraculously still have room, you can share a decadent chocolate Yule log with your party to finish. At £34 per person, including a glass of fizz to start the night, this is the perfect location for a Christmas social.

Now this pub is by no means a new addition to Chinatown. In fact, The Blue Posts has been on Rupert Street for around 275 years! However, the team behind both The Palomar and The Barbary pubs are giving The Blue Posts a revamp, adding in a cocktail bar and a kitchen counter, alongside the usual pub affair. The cocktail bar will be called The Mulwray and will offer up delicious concoctions in and old-fashioned style saloon, as well as wine and spirits by the bottle. The basement kitchen, Evelyn’s Table, will only seat 11, however offers an ever-changing daily menu. The menu is still under wraps, but with food being passed directly from chef to diner, we can imagine the dishes will be fresh and delicious. Despite all this new change, The Blue Posts will still function as a traditional pub, with independently brewed cask ale, cider and lager and good, heart pub grub up for grabs. The newly refurbished Blue Posts will open its doors on Tuesday 5 December.

Heavy Christmas party the night before? Need strong coffee and a cracking brunch to sort you out? Well, no fear, as Stoke Newington favourite, The Good Egg, is opening a new spot in Kingly Court this December. The Good Egg has been delighting North Londoners for a while with its fusion of Israeli and Canadian cuisine and will be bringing some of its iconic dishes to Soho. Highlights include their Challah French toast sandwich, served with white peach jam, candied pecans and crème fraiche and their Sahib; an Iraqi aubergine pita with tahini, mango amba, dakdak and zhoug (spicy, chilli relish when it’s at home). This Christmas, The Good Egg, will also be serving up a special menu, incorporating big festive flavours into their food and drink, such as the spiced clementine fizz and Israeli mulled wine, the cranberry cured sea trout, and of course the traditional Hanukkah donuts to round it all off. With a focus on using fresh local produce and with a takeaway section serving flatbreads, Middle Eastern salads and coffee, The Good Egg sounds like it will become the spot for breakfast in Carnaby Street this winter.
