The Best Food in London this July

30 June 2017 Livvi Alderson-Tuck

Summer in London has arrived! It might only last a week though, so make sure you take advantage of our short-lived sunshine with this bunch of new food spots – guaranteed to make your July a tasty one.

As the city enjoys a surprising heatwave, it’s easy to wish you were on a glorious beach somewhere, rather than muggy, stuffy London. Brixton Beach may just have the answer, bringing sandy beaches, palm trees and frozen tropical cocktails to South London this summer. Now open until October 1, Brixton Beach is a summer paradise on one of Brixton Village’s rooftops. Grab your flip flops and ascend to the beach, which has taken inspiration from the Village it sits upon with its range of amazing street food options. Try soft, spicy pulled pork tacos from Del 74, super creamy mac and cheese with crispy pancetta from Mac to the Future and Japanese soul food from Nanban, which fuses classic Japanese ingredients with foreign flavours – their cassava chips with kewpie mayo and pickled ginger are mouth-wateringly good. Book one of their beach huts or long sharing tables to soak up the sun this July.

Another opening offering alfresco dining this month is the new Petersham Nurseries venue, located in the aptly-named Floral Court in Covent Garden. After becoming one of London’s favourite spots for wine, food and flowers, Petersham Nurseries is opening another branch within the heart of the city. Like its Richmond-based predecessor, there will be an impressive wine cellar hosting special wine tastings and lunches, with sommeliers on hand to offer expert advice, whilst their deli will brings a range of Italian products to the UK for the first time, such as artisanal meats, cheeses, oils and breads. Main restaurant The Petersham will offer dining in the beautiful urban garden, with dishes made from seasonal ingredients and led by experienced chef Simon Whiteley, who comes via Coworth Park and Devonshire Club. The deli, flower shop and wine cellar will be open from July, with the restaurant to be launched later this summer.

Everyone loves an ice cream during the hotter months, but are you one of those people who picks out the cookie dough bits from the ice cream? If so, this new pop up is right up your street. Located at Old Street Station until the end of July, Naked Dough is celebrating the wonder that is cookie dough. This might look like your regular ice cream parlour, but the only thing that Naked Dough serves is cookie dough in a range of delicious flavours and a selection of toppings to take your dough to the next level. Try Unicorn Food – your choice of cookie dough adorned with marshmallows and rainbow sprinkles – or Hazel’s Nuts, which combines chocolate cookie dough with Nutella and Kinder Bueno. And there’s no need to fret that your sweet treat is unsafe to eat, as the founders have worked hard to perfect a cookie dough recipe which contains no raw eggs. It’s completely risk free eating!

When Chick N Sours came to the capital it sent Londoners into a fried chicken frenzy. People couldn’t get enough of the ethically sourced fried chicken with finger licking batter, the tangy cocktails and friendly, chilled out service. Now they are opening their third venture, CHICK’N, an all-day sandwich spot in Baker Street serving their signature fried chicken in soft, warm potato buns. Top your chicken with sriracha sour cream and kimchi slaw or homemade BBQ sauce and pink pickled onions. Want to satisfy your fried chicken appetite at every hour of the day? Well CHICK’N will also be serving up breakfast – such as bacon, maple syrup and chicken tender hot cakes – to kick start your day. Like the other Chick N Sours outlets, there will also be a guest fry-rotating specials for something a little different. Fried chicken is not just an after-club pit stop anymore.

Our final new opening for July comes from a trained lawyer whose unprecedented success with her range of supper clubs, pop ups and residences has resulted in the opening of her first permanent restaurant. Asma Khan’s Darjeeling Express will be bringing incredible modern Indian cuisine to foodie haven, Kingly Court. With a team of staff consisting of all the women who helped out in previous endeavours, Darjeeling Express’ menu is inspired by a family tradition back in India called ‘dawaat’. It means feast, and feast you shall with an array of large sharing platters fusing North Indian and Bengali influences. Dishes will include mutton kababs, venison koftas and slow cooked goat curry. Each Sunday there will also be ticketed roasts, which aim to pay tribute to Khan’s supper club roots. Guests will be encouraged to share dishes on large communal tables, with each week’s menu centring on a different theme.
