The Best in Music This Week: 11-17 February

8 February 2019 Billie Manning

Spotlight on: Neneh Cherry

Neneh Cherry counts among her descriptors not only musician, but DJ, broadcaster, rapper and songwriter. The Swedish singer started out in UK post-punk and found an audience as a pop star after releasing the incredibly cool, genre-bending Raw Like Sushi, before moving (or rather, floating) away from pop with her next two albums. Then, a break, then, another two releases - covers and collaborations - in the early ‘10s.

By now, we are on her fifth album. Broken Politics, produced by Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden, mixes the personal – breakfast in a café – with the political – the Calais refugee crisis – from one track to the next. Its eclectic sound is classic Cherry, moving from minimalism to R&B, but all the songs are pretty. Cherry is a consummate performer, always at ease on stage and is known for connecting with her audience – you’re likely to hear many of her most popular songs alongside the new album, if that’s what you’re into. This will certainly be the one to take your coolest lover along to on St Valentine’s.
