The Best in Music This Week: 28 January - 3 February

25 January 2019 Billie Manning

Spotlight on: Patti Smith at Roundhouse
Now in its fourth year, the Roundhouse presents In the Round 2019, a series of shows devoted to intimate performances set in the venue’s iconic main space, staged in a rarely seen fully-seated concert set up. Since its inception in 2016, its bold and adventurous programming has made it a fixture on the musical calendar and an exciting start to the year, becoming known for its special sets from an eclectic mix of artists, and this week’s selection from the festival is Patti Smith.

Smith is still a complete tour de force after 40-plus years of performance, and has proven herself captivating over and over throughout the past few years at festivals and in individual concert. Her blend of powerful, driven music with equally rousing poetic interludes, accompanied by the piercing gaze of her blue eyes, which seem to land on each individual in the crowd, is not something to be missed. An Evening of Words and Music’ combines spoken word interwoven with music from Smith’s beloved catalogue of songs. Known for her wit and warm rapport with her audiences, Smith shares personal stories from her illustrious career, providing an insight into one of music’s most revered and influential artists. What’s more, as part of the Roundhouse’s commitment to developing emerging talent, each night young artists who use the Roundhouse’s Paul Hamlyn Roundhouse Studios will perform as support acts for the headline artist, giving you the chance to see talented up and coming artists.
