The Best of Food in July

The Best of Food in July

4 July 2018 Livvi Alderson-Tuck

It’s rare that London gets the type of summer we have been experiencing of late. And while when the sun is shining, it is easy to opt for a BBQ or picnic on the common, there are still an amazing array of new restaurants opening this month; ensuring you will be fed well this summer. Read on to see where London Calling will be eating and drinking this July.

Megan’s on the Hill- Balham                  Opens 9 July

With two successful ventures already delighting Londoners with delicious food and beautiful settings in Parson’s Green and King’s Road, Megan’s third jewel in their crown is taking over an old Starbucks in Balham. This cute little spot will serve food all day, including a bottomless brunch for the weekends and more fine dining options for dinner, taking inspiration from around the globe. For brunch, they have a whole Shakshuka range, so you can pimp up your spiced baked eggs with halloumi or chorizo. In the evening, you can get a taste of the Mediterranean with chilli prawns or crispy calamari with aioli which packs a punch, before heading to the Middle East to try one of Megan’s open kebabs; choose from tender lamb, smoky chicken or charred cauliflower. Similar to the other restaurants, Megan’s is dog friendly so will be the perfect weekend destination for pooch spotting.

Akira at Japan House London- Kensington                  Opened in June

If you are a big fan of everything Japan, this new project backed by the Japanese government is right up your street. Located in Kensington, this multi floor venue will allow Londoners to immerse themselves into all of the elements of Japan’s unique culture, including their food. The onsite restaurant Akira is led by chef Shimizu Akira and his ‘trinity of cooking’ ethos, which sees the food, tableware and presentation working in harmony to provide an incredible experience. Expect stunning plates of fresh sushi, a roaring robata flame station which will create hot, chargrilled dishes using seasonal ingredients (including tender wagyu beef) and imaginative cocktails which will showcase Japanese ingredients such as sake and yuzu. The tableware and glassware has been sourced from artisanal designers and craftsman from Japan, so you will fully be transported to the Far East when dining in this beautiful restaurant.

Lady of the Grapes- Covent Garden                   Opens July

Not another Covent Garden based wine bar, we hear you cry; however Lady of the Grapes is a wine bar with a difference. While you will still be able to sample an exciting range of wines from around the globe accompanied with charcuterie and cheeses to match, all of the wines on offer are created by female wine makers. Winemaking has traditionally been a very male dominated industry, however in recent years, more women are taking the helm at vineyards across the world and Lady of the Grape plans to shine a light on these pioneering females. Furthermore, Lady of the Grape will be focusing on organic, biodynamic and natural wines for a smoother finish and less of a hangover; it’s a win-win situation!

Pitta Bun- Carnaby Street                                     Opens July

Long gone are the days where pitta breads were just used as a vessel for hummus and dips; this new opening in foodie haven Carnaby Street is elevating the humble pitta and stuffing it with a range of mouthwatering fillings for the perfect pre-theatre fix or lunch. The fillings will change with the seasons, utilizing the best produce on the market at the time, but we can expect options such as slow cooked charcoal fired lamb shoulder, crumbly feta, roasted potatoes for a serious carboload, all topped with a zingy lemon and oregano sauce. There will also be sweet options available such as butter and sugar coated pitta served with ice cream and honey. Pitta Bun will also showcase beers from carefully selected microbreweries as well as their own Greek wines.

Beef and Brew- Haggerston                                    Opens 23 July

As the name suggests, this new opening in Haggerston pretty much serves what it says on the tin; seriously good steak and specialist beer. Beef and Brew is perfect for a no fuss date night or if you are unsure where to take your Dad when he next visits London. The sourcing of the steak is taken very seriously here, with cuts coming from around the country to ensure the most tender, juicy steaks possible; the fact they are dipped in beef dripping before being cooked helps also. However, if you just fancy a beer and a snack, there are lots on offer such as fried oysters with a yuzu dressing or brisket on toast soaked in gravy. Head here on a weekday between 6-7pm for the unbelievable offer of a hanger steak and chips for a tenner- absolute bargain.
