Spotlight On: Follies
What do I need to know? A revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical first came to The National Theatre in late 2017, and it has now returned for a second round. The show tells the story of a group of performers - previous dancers at Weismann's Follies in the interwar period - reuniting thirty years later in 1971, as the venue has been earmarked for destruction. The older versions of the characters are followed around, ghost-like, by their former selves, clad in their extravagant dancers' costumes.
Any star spotting? Though the previous version might have had star pulling-power in Imelda Staunton, there is just as much sparkle and shine this time around
What’s the big deal? The story is still fascinating; costumes are fabulous; you can enjoy beautiful versions of classics such as Broadway Baby and I'm Still Here; there are some incredible tap routines. The set in particular is a wonder of high production value, the crumbling theatre-within-a-theatre turning on a rotating stage as the characters walk against it. The show measures 2 hours 15 with no interval, so be prepared - bring snacks and tissues.

16 January to 2 March 2019, National Theatre, Upper Ground, Lambeth, London SE1 9PX
