This Week 10th - 16th October

10 October 2016 Stephanie Brandhuber

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, what’s more tempting than the thought of curling up in a big warm blanket? This week’s your chance to celebrate all things warm and wooly with UK Wool Week, during which you can explore the beauty and benefits of this natural fibre. If itchy fabric’s not your thing though, don’t worry as we’ve rounded up an exciting selection of alternative London events for you to check out. From silent cinema to the UK’s best indoor music festival, we’ve got your free time covered.

UK Wool Week 2016
Now in its seventh year, The Campaign for Wool will be celebrating its growing influence with UK Wool Week 2016. The Campaign for Wool was launched in 2010 to educate consumers about the benefits of wool, promote wool-rich products to a national audience, and help to support and grow the wool industry. Run by a coalition of industry groups convened by HRH The Prince of Wales, the campaign works to engage consumers through exciting fashion, interiors, and designs during their annual Wool Week festivities. This year, The Campaign for Wool will be kicking off the celebrations with the first ever “Wool BnB”, where everything from floor to ceiling will be made of the warm, versatile fabric. Ewe’d be crazy to miss it.

UK Wool Week 2016 will take place from October 10th-16th. For a full list of events, visit The Campaign for Wool online.

Silent-film screening
This is a rare chance to see one of Alfred Hitchcock’s earliest films, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog from 1927. This silent film carries many of the themes that the famous British director would build on later in his career: suspense, psychological intensity, claustrophobia, sexuality and death. The plot involves a serial killer known as “The Avenger”, a character much like the infamous Jack the Ripper, murdering blonde women and taking cover in London’s foggy streets. The Lodger will be projected on a big screen in the atmospheric, candlelit St. John’s Church in Notting Hill, and will be accompanied by the church’s recently restored organ.

The screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog will take place on October 14th from 8-9:30pm (doors open at 7pm) at St. John’s Notting Hill, Lansdowne Crescent, London W11 2NN. Tickets are £10 and can be booked online.

Hackney Wonderland
Not only is Hackney Wonderland ludicrously affordable for a music festival, but this year the one-day event has expanded to two-days to celebrate its third year of being the best indoor music festival in the UK. Treating London to some of the most prestigious and up and coming bands around, Hackney Wonderland’s 2016 lineup promises to be their best year yet, spread across five of London’s best live music venues all within a few minutes walk of each other. Buying a festival ticket allows you to exchange it for a wristband, which will give you access to any of the venues over both days to see as many performances as you want. This year’s stellar lineup includes Mystery Jets, We Are Scientists, Lucy Rose, Swim Deep, and many more.

Hackney Wonderland will take place on October 15th-16th at Oval Space, The Laundry, London Fields Brewery, The Pickle Factory, and the Sebright Arms. Tickets are £27.50 and can be bought online.

Roll Over Atlantic
Caribbean-British poet John Agard, one of Britain's foremost cross-cultural voices and winner of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, is branching out from his written poetry to perform a quirky reimagining of Christopher Columbus’ infamous voyage to the Americas. Agard will take on a multitude of voices for the performance, including that of Columbus as well as a chorus of politically-engaged mosquitoes. Agard’s satirical revisiting of this story will take audiences on a fantastical historic voyage that will show how the tale of this great voyage still bears relevance to contemporary issues and politics. This engaging performance is a part of the 10th London Literature Festival and is sure to be a witty and irreverent treat.

Roll Over Atlantic will take place on October 14th-16th at Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, London SE1 8XX. Book tickets online.

Origami Workshop with TRULY Experiences
If you’re looking to pick up a new skill, why not book yourself in to learn the elegant and intricate art of origami. This Japanese art of folding paper will not only teach you to fold like a pro, but it will undoubtedly teach you patience and perseverance too which, let’s be honest, all Londoners can probably do with. These Hackney-based workshops will give you a unique opportunity to learn origami with hands-on guidance from London’s leading expert in paper folding, Michael Trew. This professional origami-artist has been honing his craft for fifteen years and has created paper art for the likes of Pandora, Harrods Magazine, and many more. Book your place and watch the fun unfold.

The TRULY Experiences Origami workshop will take place on October 13th at Stour Place, 7 Roach Road, E3 2PA. 7pm arrival for a 7:15 start, ends approx 8:30pm. Tickets are £25 per person and can be booked online
