This Week: 15 – 21 October

15 October 2018 Billie Manning

Chocolate, cocktails, a silent film set in the London Underground with a live soundtrack... This week, London proves it really does have it all.

1. Listen to some long-awaited Tawiah
If you already know, you already have tickets, and if you don’t know, then you should. Performing new music from her long awaited debut album, Tawiah is a south London-based singer/songwriter and DJ who has collaborated with pretty much everyone cool, won a Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award and a plethora of diehard fans since the release of her debut EP a decade ago, and she is going to be performing a very special gig at the Albany in Deptford on Friday. The Albany is a pretty special space for intimate, stripped down gigs, so this won’t be one to miss. Catch Tawiah while you still can.

2. Return to the roaring ‘20s with Notting Hill Silents
Remember the film The Artist and how that was really cool? Well, St John’s Church Notting Hill is screening a for-real silent film with a for-real live soundtrack being played on the restored church organ by Donald MacKenzie. The film on offer will be classic 1928 British thriller Underground, which takes place largely – yep, you guessed it – in the London Underground. It’s a ‘tale of romance, jealousy, treachery and murder’ and promises a hair-raising chase sequence at the end.

3. Get moving with Startin’ Point
Inject a bit of movement into your week with this three-day celebration of music and dance from the African diaspora. You won’t be lacking for anything to do if you head down to the Place to check it out, as there will be workshops, classes, dance battles and even a pretty cool dance contest where the audience can vote for their favourite young company, which should be pretty exciting.

4. Crunch some numbers at Buzz Bingo
As proved by too-cool-for-school bingo event masters Rebel Bingo, the bingo isn’t just something your nan goes to on a Thursday - or something you yell when you finally find your ex’s new girlfriend on the eleventh page of the Facebook search results. Gala Bingo has just re-opened as Buzz Bingo and they’re ready to steal Rebel Bingo’s customers. For any architecture conoisseurs out there, the Tooting Buzz Bingo hall is an absolutely beautiful art-deco building, so you can admire your environs in between rounds.

6. Go chocolate crazy, chocolate mad with chocolate week
Calling all chocoholics! This week is officially chocolate week, and if you didn’t already get an ache in your sweet tooth after reading about London’s Most Extra Desserts this weekend, then tuck into these suggestions, because there’s tons going on. If not, check out Bang Bang Oriental’s slection of chocolate inspired desserts and drinks, from chocolate milk teas to an Oreo-inspired smoothie.
