This Week: 17 - 23 September

17 September 2018 Billie Manning

This week London proves it's not too late in the year for a festival or too early to start getting gory for Halloween…

HowTheLightGetsIn Festival

Want to feed the mind and the soul this weekend? HowTheLightGetsIn – the world’s largest music and philosophy festival – is landing in the heart of London this weekend. The festival will see some of the world’s leading thinkers debating today’s biggest ideas, along with a veritable cornucopia of talks, music and comedy set in the spectacular grounds of Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath. Speakers include cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker and post-colonial theorist Homi Bhabha, while Rae Morris tops the music bill for when you want to take your thinking caps off and put your dancing shoes on.

HowTheLightGetsIn will take place at Kenwood House from 22-23 September.

Misty at Trafalgar Studio One

Following its sold-out run at the Bush Theatre, Arinzé Kene's acclaimed, subversive and inventive Misty has just transferred to Trafalgar Studios, where it will show until 20 October. If you love theatre, gigs and performance poetry, you’ll love this blend of all three. Audiences will be treated to Kene’s epic, heartfelt and playful exploration of creative freedom, all set against a pulsing vision of our capital in modern times.

Misty will be at Trafalgar Studios from 14 September - 20 October.

Conflict Café – celebrating Burmese cuisine

If you feel like sitting down to some incredible Burmese cuisine while also doing your good deed for the day, head down to peace-building NGO International Alert’s pop-up café this week. Running from 18-23 September to mark the International Day of Peace on 21 September, proceeds from the café will go towards supporting International Alert’s work building peace in Myanmar. Diners will sit at communal tables – in a skate tunnel underneath Waterloo Station no less – and get building those bridges.

Conflict Café will take place at House of Vans on the 18, 21, 22 and 23 September 2018

Natural History Museum – Crime Scene Live

Fancy yourself a bit of a Nancy Drew? Become a detective for the night and work with the Natural History Museum’s forensic experts to solve a murder mystery on Thursday night. You and your team of sleuths will explore the Museum and use the science behind crime scene investigation and detective work to establish when, where and how the crimes occurred. You'll have the chance to work with forensic experts and learn to decode blood spatter patterns or analyse fingerprints with real-life police officers. Your evidence will be vital in solving the case!

Crime Scene Live will take place at the Natural History Museum on 21 September.

London Design Fair

From Thursday to Sunday this week the fortnight-long London Design Festival will culminate in the London Design Fair. Located in the creative heart of East London, the London Design Fair is a four-day industry event that brings together 550 exhibitors from 36 countries, from independent designers to established brands, alongside features and exhibitions.
There are also many more weird and wonderful things to see and do as part of the London Design Festival in its last week. Check the full programme out here.

The London Design Fair will take place at The Old Truman Brewery from 20-23 September.
