This Week 17th - 23rd October

17 October 2016 Stephanie Brandhuber

This week we’re all about art and music. London is one of the best cities in the world to hear about the best new emerging talent, and we think we’re pretty lucky to live in such an arts-orientated city. In fact, Bloomsbury is celebrating all things arts and culture with their Bloomsbury Festival, and over in Battersea the Affordable Arts Fair is offering everyone the chance to take home a piece of art that they can cherish. So while you make it your mission this week to get involved in the arts, here are a few suggestions on where to get started.

Bloomsbury Festival
Embrace all things arty and cultural this week with Bloomsbury’s annual festival. This five-day event brings together a whole spectrum of literary, scientific and artistic events for all ages and tastes. Inspired by the centenary of SOAS and with Bloomsbury residents reflecting one of the highest levels of diversity in the UK, the theme selected for this year’s festival is Language’. Over 150 events will be hosted with over 100 partners. The events will be held in the streets, parks, museums, galleries, laboratories, public and (normally) private buildings of this vibrant cultural quarter. So head on down to this central London hotbed of creativity and join in on the artsy fun.

Bloomsbury Festival is taking place from October 19th – 23rd at various locations around the Bloomsbury area. For a full list of events and to book tickets, visit the Festival online.

Orchestral Rock
Proud to be the first ever orchestra to reach the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent, The Collaborative Orchestra and Singers are delighted to announce their upcoming orchestral rock concert. For one night only, this fantastic group of musicians will perform at the historic Coronet Theatre in Elephant and Castle on Saturday 22nd October. The Collaborative Orchestra and Singers will be bringing their unique fusion of classical and rock music, taking on classics from legendary artists like David Bowie, the Beatles, and Queen, to musical maestros like Vivaldi. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear their electrifying sound.

The Collaborative Orchestra and Singers will be performing on October 22nd at The Coronet Theatre, 28 New Kent Rd, London SE1 6TJ. Tickets start from £15 and can be booked online.

Jackie Tsai: The Harmonious Society
The Fine Art society is pleased to present the second solo show by Chinese artist Jackie Tsai, following his successful debut at the gallery in 2015. In his new collection, Tsai delivers a contemporary and often ironic take on the political and social ideology that has shaped China’s identity over the centuries. Tsai has especially chosen to draw upon the idea of ‘harmony’, a concept deeply embedded in Chinese culture. Using his characteristic pop-art style, Tsai’s vibrant and fun canvases blend western tropes with eastern artistry, and emblems of Chinese mythology with comic book characters like Superman and Batman. Borrowing tropes from both cultures, Tsai’s work suggests China’s plural and conflicting identities as a nation, touching on immigration, gambling, wildlife conservation, and the perception of cultural differences.

Guerrilla Girls: Is it even worse in Europe?
For over three decades, the Guerrilla Girls have been exposing and challenging sexism and racism in visual arts, politics and culture at large. Now, for the first time, the anonymous feminist activist group will revisit their 1986 campaign ‘It’s Even Worse in Europe’. In the summer of 2016, the Guerrilla Girls wrote to 383 European museum directors, inviting them to respond to fourteen questions about diversity. The responses they received, or did not receive, are revealed in their latest campaign ‘Is it even worse in Europe?’ launching at the Whitechapel Gallery. A new banner has been hung on the façade of the Gallery for five months, revealing that only a quarter of the museums responded to their questionnaire. The exhibition invites visitors to go inside the Gallery to discover more and view the copies of every completed questionnaire the Guerrilla Girls received. The questions and responses relate to the number of artists in recent exhibitions who are female, gender non-conforming or from Africa, Asia, South Asia and South America. On the floor of the Archive Gallery, a full list of the museums that did not respond to the questionnaire is published for all visitors to see.

Guerrilla Girls: Is it even worse in Europe will run from October 1st 2016 – March 5th 2017 at Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 Whitechapel High St, London E1 7QX. Free entry.

Affordable Art Fair
This four-day event will see a diverse and exciting line up of artists showcasing a mix of contemporary paintings, prints, sculptures and photography, all being sold at accessible prices for those looking to invest in a piece of art they love. Prices at the fair range from £100 - £5,000, and the fair team will be on hand to help visitors discover more about the artworks on offer from the new and returning galleries on show. As well as investing in stunning contemporary art, visitors can get involved in some of the innovative workshops and tours taking place over the course of the four days. These include gastronomy inspired drawing sessions, drypoint printing workshops and drop-in and draw sessions in the Creative Studio. There will also be a talk from Battersea-based London Fine Art Studios exploring the representation of wine throughout the history of art, with wine tastings from drinks partner Dark Horse wine.
