This Week 18th – 24th July

18 July 2016 Tom Faber

With the Euros and Wimbledon over and the Olympics not yet begun, this is the perfect week to get a cultural injection and make the most of the long-overdue good weather. From free theatre and escape rooms to performance art and the UK’s biggest urban beach, we’ve got you covered.

Ragnar Kjartansson

One of the world’s finest – and funnest – performance artists is the subject of a new survey at the Barbican. The Icelandic actor and artist’s work combines stage traditions with experiments in repetition and endurance, often referencing clichés of Western culture and romance. Two of Kjartansson’s recent works take pride of place: the immersive multi-channel video installation The Visitors and the funny, touching live performance Take Me Here by the Dishwater: Memorial for a Marriage, where ten troubadours sing for eight hours a day throughout the exhibition.

The exhibition is on until 4th September. Book tickets online.

Power UP

School holidays can be tough on families – kids envisage endless weeks of house-bound gadget overload and parents desperately want to swap consoles for culture. The Science Museum has the perfect solution with Power UP, their new fully interactive two-week gaming event which features the best video games, computers and consoles from the past 40 years. They’ve got over 160 systems and hundreds of games to play, from Pong to Pacman, Lego to Halo. There will be something to suit beginners and experts, competitive parents, multiplayers, retro fans, and everybody in between.

Power UP runs from 22nd July to 7th August. Book tickets online for one of four daily 90 minute sessions. There will also be adult only Late events on 29th July, 30th July and 5th August.

Othello

While the good weather lasts, what better way to combine culture and summer than an outdoor theatre performance? Oh yes, doing all that for free! For one night only Time Zone Theatre’s stylish, fast-paced adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comes to Crossrail Place Roof Garden. The drama has been transferred to the cutthroat financial world of modern London, delving into a tale of power, intrigue, suspicion and jealousy.

Othello will be performed on 21st July at 7pm in the Crossrail Place Roof Garden. Reserve a ticket online.

Escape The Bunker

You wake up trapped deep underground, desperate to escape, faced by an unknown terror outside. Will you find a way out, using only your wits and lateral thinking abilities? Since we featured Escape Rooms on our list of ways to indulge your inner child they’ve come up with a bold new plan: a new setup inspired by the tense horror movie 10 Cloverfield Lane. Best of all it’s completely free – reserve tickets now if you’re brave enough.

10 Cloverfield Lane is at the Escape Rooms from 23rd – 24th July. Book tickets online.

BeachEast at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Brazil might have the Olympics and Copacabana beach, but we’ve got thousands of tons of sand at the Olympic Park. From this weekend friends and families can enjoy the UK’s largest urban beach with deep, fine sand, paddling pools, funfair rides and two beach bars. Being the former site of such athletic prowess, the beach will of course also play host to a range of sporting events and activities.

BeachEast is open from 23rd July to 4th September.
