22 August 2016 Stephanie Brandhuber

With the Olympics over and the back-to-school shadow looming, you might be thinking the summer is well and truly over. Well, we’re here to tell you it’s not! With Bank Holiday Monday on the horizon, London’s still got plenty of punch in it yet, and we’ve picked out a selection of great events to keep those good summertime vibes going strong.

Notting Hill Carnival

Europe’s biggest annual street party is back, with even more feathers, more sparkles, and more great music. Celebrating London’s Afro-Caribbean community, the Notting Hill Carnival is a cherished event for Londoners and visitors alike. No other event demonstrates as much diversity and as much community spirit as Carnival does and it’s a guaranteed good time, every time. Put on your best dancing shoes, strap on your appetite for all that great jerk chicken available, and come celebrate by dancing in the streets with the whole city.

Notting Hill Carnival takes place August 28th-29th at Notting Hill Gate and Ladbroke Grove.

Picasso’s Desire Caught By the Tail

The Nunnery Gallery is presenting LUXE’s production of Picasso’s rarely produced play Desire Caught by the Tail in two outdoor performances to celebrate the end of their summer events programme. This is a truly unique opportunity to see an alternative side of the famous artist’s imagination. The play was written in 1941and takes place in Nazi-occupied Paris. The story reflects the angst of the time while also managing to be deeply humorous, and the absurdities and frustrations of the period will be poignantly felt by modern audiences.

The Nunnery Gallery is located at Bow Arts courtyard, 183 Bow Rd, London E3 2SJ. August 25th -26th, 7:30pm. Book tickets online.

Recycled Jewellery Making

If you’re looking for a fun and educational way to entertain the kids this Bank Holiday, visit The Crystal, one of the world’s greenest buildings. Over the weekend there will be a drop-in recycled jewellery-making workshop for children where they can make their own eco-friendly fashion accessories. Afterwards, have a wander around their exhibition on urban sustainability and take in the beautiful surroundings of the building’s waterside location.

The Crystal is at One Siemens Brothers Way, Royal Victoria Docks, London E16 1GB. Workshop is free to take part in, 27th-29th August.

National Youth Theatre’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist

The National Youth Theatre is presenting the first ever stage production of Moshin Hamid’s Man booker Prize shortlisted novel and blockbuster film The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Set in a post 9/11 climate, the story tackles what it is like to be a Pakistani man living in the suspicious, terror-obsessed Western world as we follow Changez’s disenchantment with New York and his journey back to Lahore. This NYT production has been adapted for the stage by Stephanie Street and is directed by Prasanna Puwanarajah.

The National Youth Theatre’s performance of The Reluctant Fundamentalist will take place at The Finborough Theatre, 118 Finborough Rd, London SW10 9ED. August 23rd-27th. Book tickets online.

BBC Good Food Shows

This Bank Holiday weekend, head to Hampton Court for the BBC Good Food Festival. Taking place in the stunning gardens of the palace, this three-day event is the perfect way to treat yourself over the long weekend. Hosted in partnership with independent charity Historic Royal Palaces, this foodie festival will be offering a wonderful selection of artisan products, a fantastic line up of cooks and chefs, fun family entertainment, live music, and of course food, glorious food! Join celebrity chefs Paul Hollywood, Michel Roux Jr. and John Torode in live demonstrations in the Summer Kitchen Theatre and head over to the Interview Stage to learn top-secret tips from some of your favourite chefs. Yo Sushi will also be running a masterclass, so if you want to know how to make maki and slice sashimi, roll up to learn the tricks of the trade.
