This Week 28 November - 4 December

28 November 2016 Belphoebe New

December is undoubtedly one of the most exciting months of the year. Now you have the perfect excuse to listen to Christmas songs on full blast, start thinking about gifts for the family and hang tinsel from everywhere you can think of. Kicking off a month full of Christmas festivities we have a fantastic list of creative events to keep you occupied, from London’s only Disney pub quiz event through to an illustration extravaganza and a reimagining of The Great Gatsby at Leicester Square Theatre.

Making Nature at Wellcome Collection

An absolute must see for animal lovers, this new exhibition opens at the Wellcome Collection on Thursday, the first in a year long exploration of how humans relate to other animals. It will explore our relationship with animals through the formalisation of natural history as a science, the establishment of museums and zoos and lavish contemporary wildlife documentaries. Bringing together over 100 objects from literature, film, taxidermy and photography, Making Nature will examine what we think, feel and value about other species and the consequences this has for the world around us.

Making Nature runs from 1 December 2016 – 21 May 2017 at The Wellcome Collection. Find out more here.

Quizney at Proud Camden

Ever wanted to attend an event that combines karaoke, dancing, Disney, quizzes and fancy dress? This is that event. Back for another evening of Disney duets and trivia at Proud Camden, Quizney will bring a little Disney magic to the festive season. Highlights of the evening include a Disney quiz supported by a ten piece live band, who you even have the chance to sing live on stage with. There will also be prizes for the best team name and best costume, so it’s time to dust off that Minnie Mouse onesie or Buzz Lightyear outfit and head down to one of London’s most unique events.

Quizney is on the 4 December at Proud Camden. Tickets are £13, book online here.

A Peninsula Christmas

This Christmas, Southeast London will host a magical event for grown ups and children alike, offering London a new and original twist on the Christmas season. From the Enchanted Forest to a Scandinavian-inspired Tepee Snug Bar, via Santa’s Grotto of Wonderment, sing-alongs in The Amphitheatre and a Designer-Maker Christmas Market, the Peninsula will be transformed into a lively seasonal hub packed with events over the season.

Greenwich Peninsula Christmas will run from 3 December – 22 December. Many events are free, but more information see the website.

The London Illustration Fair 2016

This Thursday The London Illustration Fair returns with a packed few days full of illustration (of course), workshops, talks, music, live signings, murals and a ton of one-of-a-kind Christmas gift ideas, all from an impressive selection of well-established and rising stars of the illustration and craft world. Alongside illustration there will be a number of stands and stalls hosting homewares, ceramics, fashion, print and jewelry. With four floors to explore, and even if you can only draw stick men, there really is something for everyone!

The London Illustration Fair runs from 1 December – 4 December, tickets are £6 advance and £8 on the door. For more information visit the website.

Gatsby at Leicester Square Theatre

The Lounge at Leicester Square will be transformed into a speakeasy for this new production starring Cressida Bonas. It’s 1925, two years after the original novel and a young woman walks into the Luna Park speakeasy asking for Gatsby, forcing the characters to confront the past they’ve been trying to escape. In Gatsby’s ‘Speakeasy’, F Scott Fitzgerald’s fantastical characters play out the drama, the wry humour and the tragedy of the novel. Audiences are invited to dress up, sip cocktails and immerse themselves in the dreams, the glamour, the magic and the excess of this iconic story.

Gatsby runs from 30 November – 15 January 2017 at Leicester Square Theatre. Book online and find out more here.
