This Week 3 April - 9 April

3 April 2017 Belphoebe New

What’s setting the capital on fire this week? Curb your caffeine cravings at the London Coffee Festival, learn about the art world’s most important queer voices and catch a new production of one of the world’s best-loved musicals, Carousel.

London Coffee Festival

Caffeine heads and latte lovers, prepare to get thoroughly roasted this week as the London Coffee Festival arrives at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane. Alongside the chance to buy almost every type of coffee you could dream of, you can cheer along star baristas competing at the Coffee Masters tournament, learn how to make better coffee at home at the barista workshops and find the perfect coffee flavour for your palette at the Ultimate Flavour Challenge taster sessions.

The London Coffee Festival runs 6-9 April at Old Truman Brewery. Find out more here.

Queer British Art

This week, the first ever exhibition dedicated to queer British art will open at Tate Britain. Marking the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England, this exhibition will look at how queer artists expressed themselves in a time when social attitudes to gender and sexuality were transforming. The exhibition will unveil a remarkable range of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender stories and chart how a sense of community was established before these terms were even first recognised.

Queer British Art runs 5 April – 1 October at Tate Britain. Find out more and book tickets here.

Run at The Place

This latest dance production at The Place is a triple bill looking at the darker side of humanity as evoked through powerful theatre and design. From Above by Tasmin Fitzgerald explores our own inability to stand up for our own beliefs, Rebecca Evan’s The Other pays tribute to horror films and plays with the relationship between light and dance whilst Lenka Vagnerova’s Fallen imagines a world where fallen angels exist around us.

Run will be performed at The Place 4 April - 5 April. Find out more and book here

Carousel at London Coliseum

This iconic musical written by the indisputable kings of musical theatre, Rodgers & Hammerstein, has plenty of instantly recognisable sing-along hits including football favourite You’ll Never Walk Alone and June Is Bustin’ Out All Over. On Friday it will light up the stage at the London Coliseum with Katherine Jenkins and Alfie Boe in the lead roles. The late Billy Bigelow gets the chance to return to the living world, having taken his own life after a botched armed robbery. He discovers that his daughter Louise has grown up to be haunted by her father’s legacy, and he sets out to restore pride in his family. Voted the greatest musical of the 20th century, this is an absolute must for musical enthusiasts.

Carousel runs 7 April – 13 May at The London Coliseum, find out more here.

Friday Late Spectacular: Macho

Do you want to be a macho man? The concept of masculinity has been a particularly prevalent and interesting topic in the past few years, and with this Friday late the Wellcome Collection will dissect the topic further, critiquing the complex science of masculinity. There will be crucial discussions of violence, men and mental health, as well as celebrations of those who subvert stereotypical notions of masculinity including drag kings and some of London’s finest male choirs.

Macho is on 7 April at The Wellcome Collection between 7pm-11pm. Entrance is free. Find out more here.
