This week: 4 – 10 December

4 December 2017 Katie Da Cunha Lewin

It’s chilly and it’s December so the Christmas season can officially start. There are lots of Christmas events on of course, but there are some other non-Christmas things to do for anyone not quite in the spirit yet.

Mistletoe and Merriment: Christmas with the Stuarts

Have you ever wondered how Christmas was celebrated in the past? This year, Ham House are taking you back in time to the reign of King Charles II to explore just that.  There will be decorations, music and presents, giving you a taste of how the family who occupied the house at that time, The Lauderdales, would have celebrated the day.

Mistletoe and Merriment: Christmas with the Stuarts is at Ham House and Garden 2 – 15 December. Entry to the house starts from £5.40.

Adam Riches: The Beakington Town Hall Meetings

Beakington Town Hall suffered a tombola related tragedy and Adam Riches is the only one who can get to the bottom of it. Comedian Riches brings a whole new meaning to the ‘whodunnit’ play, in this inventive and silly take on the genre. Get ready for an evening of laughs, and (perhaps) a real tortoise!

Adam Riches: The Beakington Town Hall Meetings is at Battersea Arts Centre from 4 – 9 December. Tickets from £10.

Give a Knit at Somerset House

Handmade presents are always lovely, but it’s nice to get tips on how to improve them. This year, Somerset House offers you the opportunity to work with two eco-designers to upcycle clothing by hacking, embellishing and reimagining; creating unique pieces for you or for you to give as gifts.

Give a Knit at Somerset House on 9 December. Tickets from £6.

It’s a Wonderful Life

The classic Christmas film is being shown at the Union Chapel. This gorgeous church near Highbury and Islington station hosts music and events all year round; don’t miss the chance to see James Stewart in one of his most famous roles in this atmospheric setting. All money raised goes to The Margins Project.

It’s a Wonderful Life is at the Union Chapel on 10 December. Tickets from £6.
