This Week - 7th - 13th November

7 November 2016 Belphoebe New

Halloween and Bonfire Night is over for another year, and so we begin the awkward transitional period in the run up to Christmas. Although it may seem like there is nothing else to look forward to for another month, we’ve created a round-up of the best cultural events happening this week to keep you busy, from experiencing life on Mars in Greenwich to skiing in Vauxhall.

Mars show home – National Observatory Greenwich
Is there Life on Mars? This futuristic exhibition at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, in collaboration with National Geographic, will give a fascinating glimpse into life on the red planet in 2037. Constructed over several months, the show home depicts a dome-like structure mined from the regolith (Martian soil), combined with recycled spacecraft parts. It will give visitors a slice of Mars life where they can experience sleeping quarters, food supplies, scientific equipment and linking tunnels to other habitats. Learn facts about our future on Mars and the very real prospect of becoming a multi-planetary species.

Catch the Mars Show Home from Thursday 10th to Wednesday 16th November, from 10am to 5pm at Royal Observatory Greenwich. Find out more here
I love this Motherf***er – Lights at Soho
In what promises to be ‘one of the most Instagrammable exhibitions of the year’ London-based artist Graeme Messer has transformed Lights of Soho into a hall of mirrors. His irreverent and thought-provoking work uses a combination of etching and LED technology to adapt mirrors from a variety of sources, including a 1930’s funfair and a WWII tank. In a world where social media dominates, Graeme challenges the observer to critique how they portray themselves online versus how they see themselves in real life.

I love this Motherf***er runs from 2nd – 26th November at Lights of Soho. Find out more here.
Myth and Magic evening - Old Spitalfields Night Market
If you miss Halloween, this event may well be for you. Inspired by the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Old Spitalfields Market will be open late this Friday for a themed night of myth and magic, including pop up magic performances, mind reading and chilling tales of London’s East End. There will be 10 super street food stalls to choose from including Bleeker Burger, Poppies and Dirty Bagels, as well as drink provided by The Prosecco Box. Other stalls will also stay open if you fancy a spot of late night shopping.

Myth and Magic is on Friday 11th November 5:30pm to 9pm at Spitalfields Market. Find out more here.
Boy with Beer – The King’s Head Theatre
25 years after the original production, Boy With Beer by Paul Boakye will be showcased at The King’s Head Theatre from the 8th November. Described as a ‘rare kind of love story’ by Boakye, it follows the relationship between Karl (Chun Nyenwe) and Donovan (Enyi Okronkwo) and explores identity, sex and new beginnings. It features new music from Taurean Antoine Chagar, regular collaborator of acclaimed drum and bass group Rudimental.
Boy With Beer opens 8th November and runs until 26th November, tickets are between £10-£15 and can be booked here.
Vauxhall Winter Village – Vauxhall
Bored of Winter Wonderland and other Central London festive events? Head down to Vauxhall from the 10th November, when the Vauxhall Street Food Garden will transform into the Vauxhall Winter Village. A pop-up ski town, this event promises to bring the French Alps atmosphere to South London. On offer will be a fondue lodge, seasonal cocktails, a cable car and a winter sports bar, so it’s time to don your ski wear and try a slightly different festive London event.

Vauxhall Winter Village opens 10th November, find out more here.
