This Week August 28 – September 3

28 August 2017 Will Rathbone

“Do you remember dancing in September? Never was a cloudy day.” Earth, Wind and Fire knew their stuff, as September, despite heralding the start of the Autumn, is often a sunny affair, with the last of the long evenings staying clear. This week, as the month changes, there’s a free LEGO® kids pop-up on the Southbank, an afrobeat rendition of classic Talking Heads music at XOYO and mouth-watering vegetarian restaurant Mildreds celebrate the opening of a Dalston branch with 50% off all food.

LEGO® Mini Missions: Ninjas in the City

A special bank holiday LEGO® Mini Missions pop-up at the Southbank brings the worlds of LEGO® City Police and LEGO NINJAGO™together in a series of puzzle-solving, clue-finding missions for the whole family to enjoy. This free immersive experience allows kids to join top City Police detective Chase McCain and the legendary LEGO NINJAGO Ninjas to help defeat the evil Lord Garmadon. It’s ideal for 5-12 year olds, but the enormous brick pits will surely entertain most adults too.

LEGO® Mini Missions: Ninjas in the City comes to the Southbank, The Queen's Walk SE1, till 28 August from 10am - 6pm. Entry is free.

Talk Radio - Old Red Lion Theatre

The Old Red Lion Theatre is one of London’s premier pub theatres, and their 60-capacity space is the perfect setting for Eric Bogosian’s claustrophobic, Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Talk Radio. A tour-de-force central performance from Matthew Jure is on the cards, as he plays late night radio phone-in DJ Barry Champlain, who uses the show to encourage his American listener’s right-wing ideologies to emerge. A play about America’s barely concealed prejudices and the power of the media to manipulate, this is a timely revival.

Talk Radio runs at the Old Red Lion Theatre, Angel, from 29 August till 23 September. Tickets are £18.

The London Astrobeat Orchestra performs Talking Heads - XOYO

A midweek boogie is good for the soul, and the music of Talking Heads’ seminal 80s albums Speaking in Tongues and Remain in Light - performed by a six-piece London Astrobeat Orchestra comprised of West African musicians and fronted by British bass player Edd Bateman - is undoubtedly a surefire way to dance your troubles away. Stressful week ahead? A trip to XOYO is just what doctor ordered.

The London Astrobeat Orchestra performs Talking Heads is at XOYO, Old Street, on 31 August. Tickets are £11.50.

Ubuntu - Stour Space

Polish photographer Alex Zalewska has spent the last ten years travelling the globe, capturing “the beauty of the planet and the unity between all beings”. Ubuntu is a series of photographs taken in the small township of Warrville, just outside of Johannesburg, that explore post-apartheid life in black communities. All the profits from any sales of Zalewska’s photographs will go toward ACO Africa, a Ugandan charity providing help to some of the most vulnerable citizens of the world.

Ubuntu runs at Stour Space, Tower Hamlets, from 3-12 September. Entry is free.

Mildreds Dalston

Mildreds is one of the most popular vegetarian/vegan-friendly restaurants in London, and their original Soho branch has been joined by outlets in Kings Cross and Camden. Dalston can now be added to that list, and to celebrate its opening Mildreds are offering 50% off all food orders for the first two weeks of trading. There’s a no booking policy, so just turn up on the day, and if there’s a queue we can recommend their espresso martinis as a fine way to kill time.

Mildreds Dalston can be found at Thomas Tower, 1 Dalston Square, and you can get 50% off all food from 29 August for two weeks.
