This Week July 3-9

3 July 2017 Will Rathbone

In true picnic style, there’s a real mezze of events in London this week, from the stars of Major League Baseball coming to town to a Nordic sculpture you can crawl inside on the Southbank. The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show brings bloom and colour to the capital, while the best of Korea comes to Kensington Olympia. So go ahead – grab a carrot baton and treat yourself to a dip in the cultural hummus on offer.

Major League Baseball

Celebrate Independence Day in style, as the stars of two of Major League Baseball’s biggest teams, the Boston Red Sox and L.A. Dodgers, take to the stage of Hyde Park’s Barclaycard British Summer Time site to play a special version of baseball on July 4. The ‘Home Run Derby’ is a quick-fire game, with both teams competing to score home runs against the clock. Elsewhere, music and ubiquitous street food stalls are present and correct – ready to feed the ears and bellies of the public.

Major League Baseball comes to Hyde Park on July 4 from 5-10pm. Entry is free!

London Korean Festival

This all day celebration of Korean culture comprises two parts. The day, from 11am – 5pm, is a free event with Taekwondo demonstrations, food stalls, Korean drumming from contemporary circus/drum group TAGO and a Virtual Reality experience previewing the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics among the activities on offer. In the evening, a concert featuring a line-up of famous K-Pop groups begins, though this event is ticketed. It’s a great chance to get immersed in a fascinating culture.

London Korean Festival is at Kensington Olympia on July 8 from 11am – 10pm. Entry is free till 5pm, then £30 for the evening concert.

Gnome King

If you happen to be wandering along the Southbank at any point this summer, make sure to pop into the Royal Festival Hall and head to the Blue Display Space on Level Two. There you’ll find Finnish artist Kalle Mustonen’s weird and wonderful large-scale wooden Gnome King sculpture. It’s a vast horizontal gnome that you can enter, based on Finnish folklore and is part of the Southbank Centre’s yearlong celebration of Nordic culture, Nordic Matters. Why not, eh?

Gnome King is at the Southbank Centre from July 5 till August 30, 11am-8pm Friday to Sunday. Entry is free!

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Now that blooming spring is over, it’s time to make the most of its hard work and enjoy the colours of summer whilst they’re in full flow. The Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is a celebration of flowers, plants and nature, and is a haven for any green-fingered Londoners out there. Day tickets are available, and there are hundreds of stalls to browse, show gardens to admire and plants to take back home afterward.

The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is on from July 4-9, 10am - 7:30pm Tues-Sat, 10am – 5:30pm Sun. Ticket prices vary, but start at £21.50 for non-members after 3pm from Thursday. Day tickets start from £32.50 from Thursday.

Bastille Day

With Bastille Day fast approaching, this Sunday you can celebrate the French National Day by heading down to Borough Market for French food stalls, a masterclass in French cooking from chef Luke Robinson, swing dance classes, hula hoop performances, games of pétanque and live French music. There’s no better time than now come together and to celebrate our cousins over the Channel. Vive Le France!

Celebrate Bastille Day at Borough Market on July 9 from 12-6pm. Entry is free!
