Top 5: Bloody Marys in London

25 May 2017 Kaysha Woollery

Nations throughout history have clamored to take ownership of the iconic Bloody Mary, and it’s easy to understand why. Whether she was born in 1920s Paris or 1930s New York, one thing remains clear: she’s grown into the most beautiful ‘hair of the dog’ around and become a staple of brunch culture. With British Tomato Week upon us, we round up the top spots to get hold of a cocktail that anyone worth their salt would be proud to put their name to.

Powder Keg Diplomacy

If you want to enjoy a Bloody Mary in breathtaking surroundings, reserve a space in the Observatory dining area of Battersea’s Powder Keg Diplomacy. This Victoriana-inspired neighbourhood bar provides the perfect setting for sampling their worldly Bloody Mary selection. For lovers of all things Scottish, ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ is made with Laphroaig and haggis-infused Monkey Shoulder (a London Calling-favoured scotch blend), plus a battered Mars bar garnish. If a Mexican twist is what you’re after, the ‘Tequila Mary’ is a fresh mix of mezcal, chipotle, and avocado, while their Jamaican-inspired Bloody Marley warms up the taste buds with jerk-infused rum and a stout reduction. Eager meat lovers can also sip on the Bloody Caesar, made with bacon-washed vodka and garnished with a crispy rasher. We challenge the rest of you to try and hold out until Sunday, the only day when the Meaty Mary is available, infused with beef jus and a splash of the Sunday Roast Gravy.

Powder Keg Diplomacy can be found at 147 St John’s Hill, Battersea, SW11 1TQ

Hawksmoor

To continue with the meatiness makes perfect sense, as it’s Hawksmoor’s speciality. They’ve mixed their ‘Bloody Mary No. 7’ with horseradish-infused gin, tomato juice, Hawksmoor spice mix and a splash of Kernel export India porter, creating a juicy, hearty finish to go with their famous burgers and steaks. Alternatively, ‘Bloody Mary No.4’ keeps it plain and simple - stripping it back to the perfect classic ingredients.

Hawksmoor can be found at multiple locations throughout London

69 Colebrooke Row

69 Colebrooke Row is famous for its ‘Prairie Oyster’ – a deconstructed Bloody Mary served in a shell-shaped dish and drinkable in one shot. Developed by Tony Conigliaro at The Drinks Factory, it consists of an egg yolk bursting lovingly on the tongue, releasing the spherified tomato juice inside (an intricate technique that the staff travelled to Barcelona to learn). The horseradish vodka flows after, blended with Oloroso sherry, clarified celery juice, Worcestershire sauce, pepper sauce and red wine vinegar. To top it off with a truly savoury kick, it’s garnished with micro herbs and shallots.

69 Colebrooke Row can be found in Islington, N1 8AA, as well as 7 Old Compton Street, Soho, W1D 5JE

The Connaught

Named the World’s Best Cocktail Bar at the New Orleans Spirited Awards, The Connaught serves arguably the most recognisable Bloody Mary. Served in their iconic chalice, and topped with celery air and grated nutmeg, it packs a punch through a touch of naga jolokia, one of the hottest chillies in the world. You can tailor your Mary to your tastes, as there’s plenty of wiggle room for experimenting with different spirits to make it just right.

The Connaught can be found at Carlos Place, Mayfair, W1K 2AL

HotBox

HotBox is another hot spot for those who refuse to choose. A five-strong Bloody Mary menu is available as part of their two-hour bottomless liquid brunch (plus prosecco and mimosas if you’re opting for a pleasure overload). Aside from the ‘Classic’, their ‘Smoked Bloody Mary’ has been upgraded with bourbon, smoked pork jus, and smoked sea salt. For those looking to spice up their brunches, the ‘Spiced Bloody Mary’ comes with horseradish, chilli salt and a pepper rim, while their ‘Green Bloody Mary’ fires up the taste buds with Chimchurri and Jalapeńos. Save the richest, most indulgent, for last with their ‘Red Bloody Mary’ – a decadent treat of gin, passata, glazed cherry tomatoes and port.

HotBox can be found at 46 – 48 Commercial Street, Spitalfields, E1 6LT
