Top 5: Fun Fitness

1 September 2016 Stephanie Brandhuber

With the Olympics now over and the summer coming to a close, you might be less concerned with getting your ideal beach bod. The truth is, you’re great as you are, but if you want to inject some exercise into your busy week and if running listlessly on the treadmill just isn’t doing it for you anymore, consider taking up an alternative form of fitness. Here are five great options to keep fit in a fun, fresh way that will keep you happy, healthy, and being your best self.

Trampolining
Few things are more fun than bouncing up and down on a trampoline. It doesn’t matter how old you are, the thrill of trampolining never gets tiresome. If you crave the springy satisfaction of this childhood pastime, why not make it a part of your weekly workout? Flip Out in Wandsworth offers trampolining classes for anyone over the age of 15. Sessions aim to boost energy, lose weight, strengthen and tone the body, and burn calories in a fun way. Alternatively, check out Oxygen Freejumping in Acton, which offers trampolining classes for both adults and children. Oxygen Freejumping is all about putting a smile on your face while you jump your way to fitness, and they even claim that jumping on a trampoline burns three times more calories than running does - now there’s something to jump about.

Flip Out Wandsworth is located at Bendon Valley, Earlsfield, London SW18 4LZ. To book a session, head to their website.

Oxygen Freejumping is located at Unit 15, Vision Industrial Park, Kendal Avenue, London W3 0AF. To book a session, head to their website.

Hula Hooping
If you’ve got the hips, they’ve got the hoops. HulaFit invites you to bring your core to the floor in their fun but intense abdominal and cardio workouts. Based in Kennington, HulaFit classes improve your strength, coordination, and help you burn calories while enjoying a fun fitness regime that will have your mind and body feeling happy, healthy, and care-free. Also encouraging hooping for fun and fitness is Anna the Hulagan. She believes hooping is for everybody and invites her students to join her in relaxed, funny, and welcoming classes. Anna was the first to start teaching hoop classes in London, so she’ll make a super hooper out of you in no time.

HulaFit has several locations, including Kennington, Westbourne Grove, Paddington, King’s Cross, Embankment, and Hackney. For a full list of their classes, visit the HulaFit website.

Hulagan Hoop Classes take place on Wednesdays from 6:30pm – 7:30pm at the Hugh Cubitt Centre, 48 Collier St, London N1 9QZ. For more information, head to Anna the Hulagan’s website.

Trapeze
Circus training is quickly becoming a popular fitness trend, mainly due to the core and muscle strengthening it involves. Swing into a healthy lifestyle with trapeze classes, a new, alternative form of exercise. Gorilla Circus offers two-hour classes for both children and adults. Students begin by practicing simple tricks on the low bar before going on to attempt more advanced moves on the Flying Trapeze. Over the summer, Gorilla Circus runs its classes in Regents Park, and in the winter they move indoors to the Hangar Arts Trust in North Greenwich. Also leading the way in trapeze training is Circus Glory in Primrose Hill, which offers trapeze classes for all ages.

Roller Derby
This one’s specifically for the ladies, sorry boys. If you’ve seen the movie Whip It starring Juno actress Ellen Page and yearned for a rad nickname and to join a team of fast skating girls who punch each other out on a roller rink, then this one’s for you. Roller Derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller-skating around a track. The game involves a designated “jammer” who skates around as quickly as possible in order to score points by lapping members of the opposite team. If this sounds like your idea of a good time, definitely check out the London Rollergirls who have been a pioneering force in London’s roller derby scene since 2006. Croydon Roller Derby is London’s youngest league and also welcomes roller girls from all walks of life to join their successful league. So if you want to be a Babe Ruthless or an Iron Maven, put your skates on join a roller derby league straight away.

Chessboxing
If you think you’ve got strength of mind and body, then chessboxing might just be the perfect sport for you. The concept is pretty self-explanatory – competitors battle it out in alternating rounds of chess and boxing. What originally started off as an art performance piece invented by Dutch performance artist Iepe Rubingh has now become an increasingly popular competitive sport. If you feel like pushing your brain and body to their physical limits, then check out London Chessboxing, where you can take classes to become a Rocky with reasoning or a checkmating Mayweather.
