Top 5: London Comedy Nights

Top 5: London Comedy Nights

27 October 2016 Nick Kyprianou

Winter’s knocking at the door with cold and dark nights, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a laugh. Let’s take a look at a selection of top comedy nights in London to combat those chilly evenings and fight the craving for that sunny pub garden, which you were enjoying only a short time ago...

Up The Creek
Just a short walk from the Cutty Sark, in South East London, lies one of London’s most famous comedy clubs founded by Malcolm Hardee, veteran of the first Soho Comedy Store. With events throughout the week it’ll leave you laughing into the night.

Every Thursday for just £5 you can see 15 comedians battle against the clock, with just five minutes to make you cackle or suffer a deadly silence before the lights go out in ‘The Blackout’, presented by Virgin Radio UK host Johnny Cochrane. Alternatively every Tuesday throughout November you could bag free tickets to be a part of series two of BBC’s No Such Thing As The News, which is a spin-off from the award-winning QI podcast No Such Thing As A Fish.

Book tickets to Up The Creek’s Friday and Saturday night comedy and you can carry on partying until 2am after the comedians have chuckled their way home.

The Comedy Loft in association with Just the Tonic Comedy Club
Every Friday and Saturday night in the heart of Camden Market, The Comedy Loft hosts a triple bill of reputable comics, which are introduced by an MC with their own fresh banter. Featuring such comedians as long-time joker Kevin McCarthy and the fresh faced BBC New Comedy Award finalist Brennan Reece, the Loft isn’t short of laughs.

Pre-book your ticket with your loved one, best friend or whole group of gals and guys and you will be looked after from start to finish. With the option to order interval drinks, food and have a go at their comedy trivia quiz, where you could win tickets to a future event or a bottle of bubbly for your table.  Stick around and after the tables and chairs are pushed to the side, while you enjoy a free glass of prosecco, you can carry on the night till the early hours with a DJ that plays the latest hits.

Next Saturday 5 November, if you’re not a fan of the fireworks, catch fast-talking gruff-voiced Canadian, Mike Wilmot; Rhys James, who burst onto the scene in 2009 as Britain’s funniest student; Rob Rouse, one of comedy's liveliest, loveable and dynamic performers and finally Andre Vincent, who was proudly born May 1964 in Woolworth's Department Store Penge.

 Laugh Train Home
From only £6 in advance and £8 on the door you can see the hottest acts in South West London. Laugh Train Home visits The Four Thieves in Battersea on a Wednesday and The Aeronaut in Acton on a Thursday. This fairly new night takes pride in booking reputable comics that you’d recognise and appreciate from TV, radio and the comedy circuit, especially if you’re a comedy connoisseur. Not only that, if The Four Thieves is your venue of choice your ticket can also be used to get a discounted pizza, which will surely help to get you over the midweek hump.

On Wednesday 9 November you can catch John Hastings in Battersea, who you may know from Sean Walsh’s Late Night Comedy Spectacular on the BBC. John will be accompanied by 20-year comedy veteran Carly Smallman, who likes to sing pretty filthy but hilarious songs and American comedienne Robyn Perkins will guide you through the laughs, MCing the night away.

Reviewed by many as a top night Laugh Train Home can get you through the week and make the hard slog to the weekend more manageable.

Top Secret Comedy Club
Hidden away in London’s Theatreland is a gem that won’t break your bank. It’s the UK’s highest rated stand-up comedy club based on Trip Advisor and Google reviews and described as the West End’s best value bar with pints from just £3! Surely London’s worst kept secret, the Top Secret Comedy Club gives you everything you could wish for with tickets from as low as £1.

With gigs every night of the week you may be spoilt for choice but coming up in the next month is a preview special from crowd favourite Sara Pascoe. Sara shot to stardom with appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Live at the Apollo and Channel 4’s Girl Friday.  Listen to Sara’s down to earth witty humour at the Top Secret Comedy Club on 14 November.

The Top Secret Comedy Club is definitely a contender for starting off your night on the town.

The Boat Show Comedy Club
Yes, you may have guessed from the name that this particular comedy club is on a boat, but don’t worry it doesn’t move so no need to worry about getting sea sick. The Boat Show Comedy Club is opposite the London Eye, ticket prices start from £8 and if you upgrade your ticket you can also get dinner and entry to the nightclub that the boat then becomes after their top acts have finished.

Headlining on 5 November is The Noise Next Door, the UK’s premier improv comedy troupe have taken the comedy world by storm. This whacky group are eight-time sell-out veterans of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and have become one of the country’s most sought after comedy club headliners. However, the night doesn’t stop with them, you can then enjoy gags from Darren Harriott, Russell Hicks and MC Bryan Lacey.

This club gives you laughs on the Thames whilst being surrounded by stunning views that can be seen when you look up and down the river.

Of course the above highlights only a few of the nights to choose from at each of the comedy venues, so make sure you visit their websites and explore what else is on offer.
