Top 5: London’s independent markets

2 November 2017 Katie Da Cunha Lewin

London has a lot of markets, selling everything from food to clothing. You might have heard of Borough market or been to Camden Lock, but what about those smaller, more unique markets hosting those weird and wonderful sellers, hard to find records or beautiful blooms? We’ve done our research to find some unusual places for you to check out.

Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road Flower Market is a unique spot in London. Home to dozens of flower sellers, you can take your pick of dried lavender, succulents, herbs or instagram’s favourite, peonies. Behind the flower market, there is a vintage and antique market, and you can browse sound-tracked by a one of their regular performers.  There are also small independent shops on either side of the road, where you can buy beautiful clothing, ceramics and homeware. This is a perfect Sunday hang out for both the tourist and the London newbie.

Columbia Road Flower Market is every Sunday from 8am - 3pm.

Sunday UpMarket

Focusing on established artists and designers, this Sunday market hosts over 200 sellers in the Old Truman Brewery. This disused brewery just off Brick Lane has a history of supporting artists and designers, encouraging market-lovers to buy direct from the maker. With an emphasis on fashion, homeware and food, you can pick up something gorgeous and something delicious to eat.

Sunday UpMarket is on Sundays 10am – 5pm in Old Truman Brewery

Greenwich market

This is a market for someone looking for alternative presents or hand-crafted unique pieces.  From hand-printed lampshades to knitted hats, some of these sellers only sell here, so it’s your chance to pick up their gorgeous and hard to find wares.  This is also the only market in the UK set in a world heritage site.

Greenwich Market is open 7 days a week and Bank Holidays 10am - 5.30pm.

Independent Label Market

And if all this music makes you thirsty, the Independent Brewery Market is hosted on the same day, just next door.

The Independent Label Market comes to Old Spitalfields Market on 25 November 10am – 6.30pm.
