Top 5: Milkshakes in London

22 June 2017 Kaysha Woollery

It’s been a scorcher all week, so we’re cooling off with a much-needed milkshake round. We’re milking the city for the creamiest hotspots to sample a top shake - best enjoyed with burgers and fries, or alone in its purest form. Check it out.

Canvas Café

Canvas Café is home of the vegan freakshake, blended with handmade vegan ice cream and soya milk (or almond milk, if you prefer). This social enterprise and creative space off Brick Lane was crowned London’s First Happy Café in 2015, and their freakshake menu alone is enough to know why. The shake comes in three varieties: Chocolate (topped with meringue and an almond macaron), Raspberry (topped with whipped soya cream, raw cakes and cranberries), and every clean-eater’s ultimate freakshake fantasy, Avocado (topped with lashings of melted dark chocolate, raw cakes, and a sprinkling of pistachios).

Canvas Café can be found at 42 Hanbury Street, Brick Lane E1 5JL

Shake Shack

Since Shake Shack brought their famous frozen custards over from the US, they’ve been combining them with hand-spun milkshakes – thereby upgrading an already decadent menu of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, caramel and peanut butter. Ladies and gentlemen, they give you the Concretes: a deluxe blend of buttery custards with anything you can imagine - fudge sauce, truffle cookie dough, doughnuts or even a slice of pie. We recommend their Union Shack (chocolate custard, chocolate hazelnut brownie, fudge sauce, chocolate chunks and sea salt) and the Drury Lane Jam (vanilla custard, strawberry jam, brown sugar biscuit and banana). Don’t like anything you see on the menu? Then create and name your own.

Maxwell’s Bar & Grill

Having launched their own freakshakes in 2015, Maxwell’s menu has since grown to over 20 different flavours, including Pokémon Freakshakes. Yes, you can capture your favourite little creatures, and blend them into liquid form. The Squirtle Freakshake (blue bubblegum shake topped with whipped cream, bubblegum millions and a Pokéball doughnut) is perfect for an extreme sugar fix, while their Bulbasaur Freakshake (aero shake topped with cream, aero balls and a Pokéball doughnut) sends you into minty heaven. If drinking beloved little animals isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other indulgent varieties to tickle your fancy, from Salted Caramel Doughnut to Oreo Cookie via Mars and Cookie Monster.

MEATmarket

If there was ever a school of hard shakes, MEATmarket’s menu tops the class. If you want a sweet bourbon hit, the Tennessee Maple packs a punch with maple syrup, Jack Daniel’s and vanilla shake, while the Honey Shake is dripping with Jack Daniel’s Honey and chocolate. The White Russian is taken to the next level in shake form, while the creamy Banoffi Hi blends pisang ambon with caramel. For something truly indulgent try the Black Forest, a decadent mix of chocolate and cherry liqueurs. The softies also get spoilt for choice with chocolate, strawberry, malt choc, salted caramel and vanilla.

Ed’s Easy Diner

Sometimes you just need more than one flavour in your life. That’s where Ed’s double flavour shakes come in, with coffee and banana, mint chocolate and mocha. Their deluxe shakes blend all your pantry favourites with Nutella, Lotus Biscoff, Oreo and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Aside from their hard shakes and skinny shakes (made with frozen yogurt) you can dial up your milkshake game by adding malt for a sweeter, thicker version – perfect for upgrading the standard range of coffee, butterscotch, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, banana, mint and white chocolate.
