Top 5: Mother’s Day Activities for 2017

23 March 2017 Belphoebe New

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to let that special person in your life know how much you appreciate them. For all those years of nappy changing, waking you up in time for school, cooking you dinner and being a shoulder to cry on! If you want to give her something a little more special than a card this year, here’s a roundup of mum-friendly ideas for activities this 26 March.

1. Go for a walk through nature

Seeing as Spring is now upon us, it makes sense to make the most of the newly sunny (or at least slightly less cold) weather! Get away from London’s concrete urban confines for a mumsy morning of walking and enjoying nature at some of the city’s prettiest parks and reserves. Kew Gardens is an obvious choice - it looks particularly colourful at this time of year as the flowers begin to bloom and you can marvel at the exotic plant life in the Palm House. Alternatively, in Barnes is London Wetland Centre, an expansive wetland reserve with beautiful lakes and gardens where you can spot wildlife such as ducks and otters running and swimming around. They’re offering free entry for mums on Mother’s Day, so take her along for a slice of the countryside in the cityscape. If you’d prefer to escape eastward, take mum down to Columbia Road Flower Market in Hackney, which on a Sunday feels more like a charming little town high street rather than inner-city London.

2. Enjoy some afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is perhaps the quintessential Mother’s Day activity, and fortunately you’re spoilt for choice in London. For a cultural environment, take mum for an afternoon tea with a glass of prosecco at the V&A or the British Museum before taking an afternoon wander around the exhibits. If your mum is a little bit of a hipster, Little Nan’s branches in Catford and Deptford are offering a boozy Afternoon tea in their palm-tree adorned retro bar interior. If you really want to go all out, where better than the Savoy? This year they’re not only offering their extravagant afternoon tea, but a bouquet of flowers for mum and a complimentary Penhaligons perfume.

3. Enjoy a day at the spa

A spa day is certainly pricey, but it’s something you can both enjoy. Let mum have a day free of the stress of say, bringing up her children, at one of London’s many spas. Cowshed, in beautiful Primrose Hill, are offering a special mother’s day package of manicures, champagne and an LED facial for her for £125. At their Bethnal Green, Wimbledon and Old Street branches, Spa London are offering a special mother’s day for two deal, including a thermal spa experience and a signature spa treatment for £70.

4. Have brunch (and make it bottomless)

Is there anything more relaxing and gloriously decadent than brunch? Treat mum to a delicious boozy brunch in the capital. Both Duck and Waffle and Sky Bar offer the chance to enjoy a luxurious brunch high up in the sky, toasting a glass of champagne whilst looking out at incredible views across the capital. You can also enjoy a truly neverending brunch experience with some of the fantastic Mother’s Day brunch deals, including Galvin Hop in Spitalfields, who will be serving some brunch specials and unlimited prosecco for just £10. Experience some East London cool at Oslo, who alongside their brunch menu will be offering 2 for £9 cocktails and free prosecco for pre-booked tables before 6pm.

5. Work together

On a Sunday? It’s better than it sounds. Don’t just buy mum chocolates and flowers, but learn how to make deliciously rich chocolates and arrange bouquets yourself. Pretty Shiny Shop in Finsbury Park will be helping you create your own floral bouquet to give to mum, hydrated by tea and fuelled by delicious homemade cake. A few days later in Southwest London, Social Pantry Café will be hosting a night of flowers and fun, where you’ll learn how to create and hand tie your bouquets with bottomless prosecco, nibbles and a complimentary goody bag at the end of the night. If nibbles are your thing, take part in a My Chocolate Luxury Chocolate workshop where, you guessed it, you’ll be making your own chocolate, pairing flavours and creating your own delicious fresh cream truffles, a chocolate martini and even a giant chocolate daisy.
