Top 5: Ways To Pretend It’s Still Summer

20 September 2018 Billie Manning

The nights are drawing in and the temperature’s dropping. Jumpers are being pulled out of bottom drawers and someone’s already invited you to a Christmas do. But don’t let anyone tell you summer’s over – London is certainly still buzzing with plenty of sunny vibes. Here are 5 ways you can cling on to that July feeling.

Get a summer injection at the LDN Block Party

What could possibly be more summery than a block party?! Goose Island is bringing the American-style street party back to London for a third year, which means The Oval in Bethnal Green will see a complete road closure to make way for the partying hordes. The event is certainly bigger and badder than ever this year, with none other than The Vaccines as headliner, supported by punk rock three-piece Dream Wife, as well as a DJ set from fellow Londoner and huge talent Ghostpoet, so you won't be short on opportunities to move your feet. Expect a wide selection of Goose Island's award-winning beers, as well as tasty food pairings to go with them from kings of gnarly BBQ Harley Dogs, pizza-purveyors Born & Raised and more. And don't worry - there is always an indoor space if it rains.

The LDN Block Party will take place on 22 September at The Oval, London E2 9DT

Get some outdoor time with Luna Cinema

Luna Cinema is valiantly showing films outside until October(!) when its final screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will see Eddie Redmayne wrestle with small fluffy things while you admire the stunning rooftop views from One New Change. Until then, you can go and see Shape of Water at the superbly fitting venue of Brockwell Lido, or head a little further afield to Hampton Court Palace for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone or Moulin Rouge… although Philosopher’s Stone gives us a suspiciously warm and Christmassy feeling…

Luna Cinema will be hosting cinema screenings in multiple venues across the UK until 7 October.

Celebrate London talent at Underbelly

What could be more summery than a festival on the banks of the Thames? Underbelly Festival, now in its 10th year as a summery stalwart of London life, remains on the Southbank until the last day of September. Why not catch Black Cat Cabaret before it ends on 30 September, and see acrobats, aerialists and more come together with a house band to make up a dazzling combination of circus and cabaret. If you have little ones with you, and don’t fancy their chances near a fire-breather, you also have two more chances to catch the only DJ whose biggest shows are on a Sunday: Monski Mouse. Ms Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall will have little ones and parents alike boogying to the biggest tunes in nursery history.

Underbelly Festival is at the Southbank until 30 September.

Stay on a high at a rooftop bar

As Shakespeare once very famously said, “Get thee to a rooftop bar, go, before they close up for winter! To a rooftop bar, go, and quickly too!” Enduring summer fave Frank’s Café is open for Peckham residents (or those willing to board the overground) to enjoy until Saturday, whereas East Londoners have a little bit longer to enjoy the sun in Stratford at Roof East, which is keeping its doors open until October rolls around. And for those with four-legged friends, Skylight in Wapping will be holding a very special event for pooches and their owners on Sunday - Dog Day! There will be 2-4-1 cocktails (think the 'Pugtail' and 'Frenchie 75') and complimentary treats a-plenty by Twinky's Bakery, Lily's Kitchen and others for the pups. If your furry companion is photogenic enough, you might even win a prize for 'best photo of a dog at Skylight'.

Frank's Café is at Bold Tendencies, 7th-10th Floor Multi Storey Car Park, 95A Rye Ln, London SE15 4ST until 22 September.

Roof East is at Stratford Multi Storey Car Park, Great Eastern Way, London E15 1BB until 30 September.

Dog Day will take place from 12-6 on Sunday 23 September at Skylight, Tobacco Dock (Pennington St entrance), London E1W 2SF.

What better way to get yourself in a sunny mood than a cool, crisp pint? A cool, crisp, FREE pint! Today, Young’s turns the big, er, 187 years old and is celebrating by giving away complimentary brews of the good stuff. You can get a free pint at any Young's pub from now ‘til Sunday, and with more than 100 pubs in every corner of London participating, there’s sure to be a pub near you. If you hold the glass up to your eye and look out the window, it might even look like the sun is shining.

You can get a free pint of Young's Special, Bitter or Gold at Young's pubs from 20-23 September.
