Unmissable Quirky Christmas Days Out For Families

28 November 2018 Billie Manning

Looking for something that will thrill the kiddos – and won’t bore your Christmas socks off? Had enough of flat fairytales and passionless panto? Want to get stuck in and get your hands dirty? We’ve got the perfect days out for you.

Christmas Family Day at Westminster Abbey
Celebrate Christmas with a day of free events for children and families in the historic precincts of Westminster Abbey. Activities include making Christmas tree decorations, with ALL the glitter, a Christmas Carol singalong with the Abbey’s very own choristers and some charming Christmas tales to listen to as the day closes out. Bonus: all events are free and an entry ticket to the Abbey not required.

Christmas Family Day, Saturday 15th December, 10.00am – 2.00pm, Westminster Abbey, SW1P 3PA

Christmas at the Museum of London Docklands
Families looking for a historical take on the festive period can meet characters from Charles Dickens’s classic tale A Christmas Carol before meeting Father Christmas at a traditional Victorian grotto. Scrooge, Cratchits and others will be roaming the galleries, and there will be Christmassy activities and performances peppered throughout the day. Meanwhile, an impressive full-sized reconstruction of Victorian Wapping will be bedecked in holly and snow, with Christmas carols heard in the distance as you wait for Santa.

Museum of London Docklands
Christmas grotto, Sat 1 – Sun 2, Fri 7 – Sun 9 & Fri 14 – Sun 23 December 10.30am – 5pm
A Docklands Christmas Carol, Sat 1 – Sun 2 & Sat 8 & Sun 9 December, 11am – 4pm

Christmas at LEGOLAND
Summer isn’t the only time to explore the land of tiny bricks, you know – they put on a spiffing Christmas schedule as well. Of course, there will be the opportunity to meet the big man himself – tucked away in a grotto only accessible via the Brickmas Express – and receive a LEGO gift. Father Christmas’ elves will also be on the lookout for little helpers to write letters to Father Christmas and build LEGO candy canes and festive decorations. A metric brick-ton of fun!

Winter Wildlife Workshops at the London Wetland Centre
If you and your little ones are lovers of the Great Outdoors, there’s no need to hibernate over the Christmas period. At WWT London Wetland Centre you can hop aboard for a husky sleigh ride, or help the Christmas elves knock some wildlife-themed gifts together.  There are also loads of educational activities - discover which animals hibernate on site and make a home for them using natural materials, or tick and twitch your way into 2019 with a birdwatching walk.

Winter at the London Wetland Centre, 15 & 16, 22 - 24, 29 December - 6 January, Queen Elizabeth's Walk, London SW13 9WT

Christmas at the Postal Museum
After you’ve sent off your letters to Santa, why not go and see how they get there? Over Christmas, The Postal Museum’s subterranean ride – taking visitors back in time to the heyday of the postal railway – will get a Christmas makeover, including the broadcast of the first King’s Speech on the BBC. There’s plenty going on above ground, too, with wreath-making, floral centrepieces, seasonal stationary or personalised present sacks in artist-led workshops, as well as storytelling sessions across the Christmas period.

Christmas at the Postal Museum, from 1 December, 15-20 Phoenix Pl, London WC1X 0DA

Bonus: if your little ones are CBeebies fans (and who isn’t?) why not enter our competition to win tickets to the cinema premiere of their Christmas show, Thumbelina!
