What’s On Stage This Week: 4 - 10 February

2 February 2019 Billie Manning

Spotlight On: Waitress

Although the official opening night of this hugely anticipated Broadway transfer is 7 March, previews are starting on 8 February, so the chance to get a ticket is being served up sooner than you might think. Since opening in 2016 over in the US, Waitress was nominated for approximately one million awards including the Tony for Best Musical, and has proved extremely popular, so we’re jazzed to see it come over to our rainy shores, where the Adelphi Theatre will play host. Excitingly, Waitress boasts an all-female lead creative team, which is a West End musical first. Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland) directs, Lorin Latarro choreographs, and you might remember Sara Bareilles for steadfastly refusing to write you a love song because you asked for it in 2007, but she’s also a 6-time Grammy nominee and has written the original music and lyrics for the musical.

So, come on, what’s it actually about? Well, I can’t lie to you; the clue has been there in the name the whole time. Jenna is a waitress and expert pie-maker who is dreaming of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. (She’s also an expert pun-maker, apparently – we see her craft desserts such as ‘The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie’.) Anyway, we see Jenna finally taste the possibility of change, and jump to bake the opportunity in both hands (sorry). Almost as exciting as the show itself are the post-show karaoke nights where you can fulfil your dreams of actually singing actual West End songs on an actual West End stage - interested audience members just need to sign up in the theatre before the performance.
