Where to Celebrate Oktoberfest in London

3 October 2018 Billie Manning

The yearly German beer festival takes over London this month, and you know what they say: you can lead a Londoner to beer, but you’ll never be able to stop them drinking. With that in mind, we’ve made up a list of the best (and never the wurst) Oktoberfest events to make an a-beer-ance at.

The Official Camden Oktoberfest
Now in its third year, the Official Camden Oktoberfest will be returning to satisfy all of North London’s beer-drinking, sausage-eating needs. The festival has moved this year to the Electric Ballroom Camden, which will be decked out with long wooden tables and bunting fit for a decadent bohemian schloss. Waitresses and waiters dressed in Dirndl and Lederhosen will be on hand to keep all steins filled to the brim, and none other than wurst kings Herman ze German will be serving up their famed fare to the tune of a live drum and brass band, later followed by DJs and dancing. With all that on offer, it’s sure to score at least a nein out of ten.

Erdinger Oktoberfest
With a capacity of over 3000 and running every Thursday-Sunday throughout October, the Erdinger Beer Tent is one of the biggest Oktoberfest events in the capital, and is certain to be lager than life. This is one of the more classic Oktoberfest celebrations to be found in the city, with traditionally dressed servers as well as German dishes like pork knuckle and apple strudel on the menu. What’s more, Erdinger will be hosting special events on certain nights, such as Pink Oktoberfest for the LGBT+ community, with drag shows and fairground rides, and a spooky Halloween closing party. We’re sure you’ll go hopping mad for it.

Brixton Oktoberfest
For the too-cool-for-school crowd amongst us, Brixton meets Berlin for a big bad Bavarian-British blowout every Saturday in October at Brixton Jamm. Herman Ze German makes another appearance alongside pizza-purveyors Freewheelin’ Pizza. You may even get the full Berlin experience, as their Berlin-themed club room promises a thematically-appropriate selective admission policy - just remember to wear black, look serious and not talk very much. If you’re deemed worthy, you’ll be treated to an immersive techno experience, as well as games like Pass Ze Parcel and Bier Stein Pong, which alongside their huge craft beer selection and steins of cocktails, are sure to get you in the party mood.

Heist Bank Beer Festival
For something slightly different to the usual, try the Heist Bank Beer Festival. The festival will be headlined by three top breweries - Fourpure, Wild Beer Co. & Siren Craft Brew - who will be taking over the bar’s twelve taps throughout the weekend, so you’re sure to find something you’ll like. The festival will also include hands-on workshops such as beer & cheese pairing, as well as all the beer-based games you can think of, including beer bingo, beer pong, and a Kegheads competition, as well as DJs and plenty of pizza. Prost!

Bavarian Beerhouse
Last but certainly not yeast, if you’re finding that Oktoberfest is burning a hole in your pocket, Bavarian Beerhouse is not only the UK's longest running Oktoberfest event, going on 14 years in 2018, but it is also one of the most reasonably priced, with free entry on Wednesdays, and reserved seating on weekends (with complimentary stein) costing you under £15. You’ll beer-ly notice the difference in your wallet! What’s more, you’ll get properly looked after: proper glasses, proper plates (rather than the annoying and environmentally unfriendly plastic and paper varieties) and no chance of a muddy floor.
